Bears finish off Eagles

GARDEN CORNERS — The Big Bay de Noc girls made short work of Hannahville here Tuesday night in a 58-14 basketball victory.

Big Bay led 18-6 after the first quarter and 32-6 at halftime of the Northern Lights League game.

Meagan Yonker and Alix Bleau scored 14 points each and Kaitlyn Massengill added 10 for the Black Bears (2-1 overall, 2-0 NLL). Brianna Malinowski had seven for the Soaring Eagles in their season-opener.

“Toward the end of the first quarter, we had a nice little spurt,” said Big Bay coach Bob Pederson. “We pretty much took control at that point. They have a lot of young girls, although the Malinowski girl played hard and ran their offense. She’s a good ballplayer. We put our best defenders on her.”

Big Bay hit 25-of-64 field goals, collected 19 offensive rebounds and committed 12 turnovers.

“Our height advantage worked real well for us,” said Pederson. “Twelve turnovers, that’s good for us. We’ve been averaging about 18 a game. It was nice to see everybody get in the game.”

The Black Bears host Superior Central Thursday. The Soaring Eagles visit Grand Marais Friday and Saturday.
