Wolves beat Nordics
CARNEY — The Carney-Nadeau boys’ basketball team put on a dominant showing in veteran coach Paul Polfus’ return to the sidelines, dismantling the North Dickinson Nordics 67-27 in its season-opener Friday night in Carney.
The Wolves hit 14 triples and left no doubt from the start, leading 22-5 at the end of the first quarter.
“I thought we came out with a lot of energy,” Polfus said. “We tried to pressure as much as we could. I thought we did a great job with the idea of making the extra pass on the perimeter. We didn’t turn the ball over much. I’m very happy with the way we played, especially with the energy we came out with.”
Brett LaFord led the way with a triple-double, finishing with 15 points, 16 rebounds and 12 steals.
Max Baumler hit seven 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Beau Koffman added 12 points. Freshman Brayden Kakuk chipped in six points and 10 boards.
“(Brett) always plays with a high motor. It seems like he’s in the middle of a lot of stuff, taking up space and getting a big rebound. He gets a lot of steals being in the right spot and he always seems to be in the mix,” Polfus said. “That’s something you don’t really teach, that’s just how he plays — with high energy and with a little bit of a chip on his shoulder.”
The Wolves shot 26 for 62 in this Skyline Central Conference contest, while the Nordics shot just 11 for 39. C-N outrebounded the Nordics 57-22.
“We rebounded very well and got lots of long rebounds by getting our hands on the ball from being in the lane,” Polfus said. “I’m very pleased with the overall effort, especially the rebounding.”
Cameron Schultz led the Nordics with eight points.
C-N, which lost the jayvee game 37-36, visits Stephenson Monday.
