Scott Degnan and Leroy Sovey inducted into Escanaba Motor Speedway Hall of Fame

ESCANABA — Scott Degnan and Leroy Sovey were inducted into the Escanaba Motor Speedway here Sunday as well as Veterans receiving recognition for their service to our country.

Degnan who has 174 feature wins in his career and 17 track championships stated that it is a humbling moment to know that his name sits with the other legends of the track including Bob Iverson, Allen Yelle, Jerry Richer and Don Benoit who were the inaugural class of drivers and also Dick Cool and Boyd Widdis who were inducted in 2024 and last year’s inductees Jake Valiquette and Earl Iverson.

“It’s an honor to be a part of that group,” Degnan said. “All the hard work and time and money that went into this all paid off last night at a place that feels like home.”

Joining Scott in the Hall of Fame was Leroy Sovey who served as the Speedway’s flagman for many years. He also pitted for drivers and built chassis and was always there to help racers and his impact on the track will be known forever.

In the super mod class, Drake Degnan picked up the feature win over his dad Scott on Father’s Day for the second consecutive year.

“I wouldn’t be happy losing to anyone but him,” Scott Degnan said. “It’s rewarding to see him following in the tradition of the racing family that we have and it was a proud moment.”

Scott Degnan came in second and picked up a win in heat race action. Rick Ness had to settle for third after winning three straight to start the season. Paul Hosking and Ron Anderson rounded out the top five.

In the 600 sprints, Bentley Richer picked up the heat and feature sweep. Jace Murray came in second after coming from fifth on the starting grid. Chase Richer finished third and Jayger Quinn and Brayden Lundquist rounded out the top five.

In the junior sprints, Keagan Jensen was victorious for the second week in a row as he swept heat and feature race action. Colten Yelle finished second and won the other heat race. Tanner Rae was third and Wyatt Ammel and Carson Wagner rounded out the top five.

In the sportsman sprints, Dalton Gustavson picked up the heat and feature sweep. Braxton Lundquist charged from seventh place on the starting grid to finish second and Tanner Hanson came in third. Macy Degnan and Kisty Karl rounded out the top five and Andrew Karl won the other heat race.

In the vintage modified class, Charles Peterson came away with the heat and feature win and had this to say after the race.

“I want to thank my family and all the Veterans for there service as well as my sponsors I couldn’t do it without them”

David Broeders came in second and Jeff Salomon finished third. Harvey Lewis and Derek LeBresh rounded out the top five.

In the street stock class, Brayde Lundquist came from eighth on the grid to pick up the feature win his second of the year in the street stocks and his third overall. Brayden also was victorious in heat race action. Tony Begovac came in second and also picked up a heat race win. Eric Mathieson finished in third and Drake Degnan and Cole Hadwell rounded out the top five. Karter Koth struggled after starting on the pole and finished in 10th with a DNF along with Billy Bowden, Paul Wagner and Cody Turner all not finishing the race.

In the sport modified class, Matt Maki IV picked up a heat and feature sweep. Robby Iverson was second and Rick Gustavson finished the night in third. Matt Valiquette and Ryan Lindbert rounded out the top five. Kyle Johnson won the other heat race.

In the sport compacts, Calvin Stueck picked up his third feature win of the season as well as a win in heat race action. Tanner Olson came in second and won the other heat race. Gerald Lanaville finished third and Andrew Vandrese and Mike Berube rounded out the top five. Burberry came from 11th place on the starting grid to get the top five finish.
