Cougars fall against Mustangs

MUNISING — The Munising girls basketball team has been struggling to get off to a good start in each of its games this season and it happened again Wednesday night against Superior Central.

However, the Mustangs recovered quickly and got good games from the Matson sisters, Megan and Jenna, as they took down the Cougars 68-31. Megan finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds, while Jenna had 16 points as Crystal Murdock chipped in 12 points for Munising.

Charlotte Charlebois was the Cougars’ offensive leader with 10 points.

SC took a quick lead, but Munising rallied and led 20-11 after the first quarter. Then the Mustangs blew the game open in the second, outscoring the Cougars 18-4 in the quarter and taking a 38-15 advantage into the half.

“They came out 6-2 and took the lead on us to start with,” Munising head coach Matt Mattson said. “Our first two games, we didn’t start well, so we called a timeout and gathered ourselves and then we played pretty well.

“Megan had 27 points in the last game and 30 tonight, so she’s finding herself a little bit. Jenna also had a nice night. She’s our point guard….

“We only have eight on our roster this year and three of them are sophomores. So it’s a little different group and we’re still trying to find our roles a little bit, but it’s an improvement tonight.”

Munising won the JV game 38-20.

The Cougars travel to Rapid River Friday, while the Mustangs host Brimley Tuesday.
