Norse win in OT for second time this year

LACROSSE, Wis. — The Bay College men’s basketball team seems to enjoy overtime. The Norse picked up their second win — and second overtime win — of the season here Saturday with a 79-72 victory over Western Technical College.

In a back-and-forth game that featured 11 lead changes in the first half alone, the Norse (2-2) started the second half on a 13-0 run to give them a 45-33 cushion.

The Cavaliers responded by taking control for nearly the rest of the half, building a seven-point lead with just two under two minutes left to play.

But the Norse turned up their defensive pressure and forced multiple turnovers down the stretch, sending the game into overtime tied at 67. The Norse then hit 4 of 7 seven shots and built a double-digit lead in the extra session before holding on for the win.

“I was really happy with the way that we responded tonight, especially after the way that last night (Friday) in Rochester went,” Norse coach Matt Johnson said. “I was happy to see the kids fight, weather the storm when Western made their run, and the fact that we had some guys step up down the stretch and figure some things out. I was proud of the effort and how hard we worked, but we definitely still have some room to improve on the discipline and execution. It was a good win and I am proud of the guys.”

Ryan Robinette of Escanaba led all scorers with 26 points, 18 of which came on three-pointers. He also grabbed seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Chris Dobessi chipped in with a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 boards. Christian Alexander also had a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Matt Wagner added 12 points and five assists.

Bay forced 30 turnovers as a team.

Jarrell Tarr led the Cavaliers with 16 points, 11 assists and six rebounds. Austin Malkowski knocked down four triples to finish with 13 points. Hunter Davis added 10 points and six boards.

Bay hosts Lake Superior State’s jayvee team in its home opener Sunday.
