Ives comes up big for Broncos

EBEN — Tressa Ives came up big when Bark River-Harris needed her here Thursday, serving for 10 straight points to begin the do-or-die fifth set to propel the Broncos to a 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 25-14, 19-25, 15-3) volleyball victory over Superior Central.

Ives served 31 times, coming up with four aces while missing just one serve. She also added three kills.

The Broncos (5-1) had to win in the fifth set against a Cougars team that wouldn’t go down quietly.

“Overall, I am happy with our effort tonight,” said BR-H coach Jen Ives. “Coming off of a hard loss against Carney (Tuesday), we needed to regroup.

“We cleaned up our serving and served 90 percent overall for the night. Ultimately, it came down to our serving, blocking and well-timed kills.”

Makena Lockwood led BR-H with 10 kills, two blocks and two aces. Kassidy Roll added seven kills and six blocks, Alaska Peterson had 12 assists and an ace, and Alexis Berg chipped in with four digs and two kills.

“Kassidy Roll showed up big time for us tonight and made some key blocks,” coach Ives said. “Makena Lockwood helped shift momentum by adding kills and Tressa Ives led game five out of the gate with the first 10 service points. Although the stats don’t reflect it, Cara Zawacki played a solid game and was really the voice behind many of Kassidy Roll’s kills in letting her know where to place the ball.

“I’m also proud of Alaska Peterson’s effort. She has no give up in her and will continue to fight for assists. We have no games next week and will be focusing on our communication as a team and serve receive, which was our biggest struggle tonight.”

The Broncos resume Oct. 1 when they host Norway. Superior Central visits Norway Tuesday.
