Redmen edge Eskymos

MARQUETTE — The Marquette tennis team got six of its seven victories in straight sets, knocking off Escanaba 7-1 here Monday.

Marquette’s only three-set win was at No. 4 singles, where the Redmen’s Ben Sternschuss held off Shaun Beauchamp 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

The Eskymos’ lone victory came at No. 2 doubles, where Ryan Moreau and Jayger Lamarch downed Luke Ferzacca and Soren Higgins 6-4, 6-1.

MSHS No. 1 singles player Alec Olivier continued his high school dominance, blanking Esky’s Christer Carne 6-0, 6-0, while his freshman brother Nick Olivier took No. 2 singles over Gunner Dlugas 6-2, 6-1.

Marquette also dominated at the high flights of doubles, with identical 6-1, 6-0 scores posted by Marquette’s Beau Belkowski and Robert Apple over Garrett Johnson and Isaac Maki and by Jack Franchino and Casey Yaden over Connor Smale and Joe Hubert.

Marquette remains home for a 3:30 p.m. match today against Menominee, while Esky hosts Kingsford at 4.

Singles

No. 1 — A. Olivier (M) def. Carne 6-0, 6-0; No. 2 — N. Olivier (M) def. Dlugas 6-2, 6-1; No. 3 — Zhang (M) def. Mayville 6-4, 7-5; No. 4 — Sternschuss (M) def. Beauchamp 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Doubles

No. 1 — Lewis-Johnson (M) def. Burch-LaMarche 6-0, 6-2; No. 2 — Moreau-Lamarch (E) def. Ferzacca-Higgins 6-4, 6-1; No. 3 — Belkowski-Apple (M) def. Johnson-Maki 6-1, 6-0; No. 4 — Franchino-Yaden (M) def. Smale-Hubert 6-1, 6-0.
