Bay cagers sweep Alpena

ALPENA — A strong fourth quarter push by Bay College was too much for the Alpena Community College women’s basketball team to overcome on Monday.

Jordan Kraemer scored 20 points and the Norse toppled the Lumberjacks 57-49 at Park Arena.

Both teams played to a 41-41 tie through three quarters, but the Norse’s ability to disrupt ACC’s offense, make timely shots and get to the free throw line ultimately paved their way to victory. Over the last 10 minutes, the Norse outscored ACC 16-7.

ACC (2-18) struck first in the fourth quarter after Taylor Livingston drained a three-pointer just 15 seconds in. From there however, the game belonged to the Norse, who went on a 13-0 run to take the lead for good.

Jordan Belleville added eight points and Kaitlyn Hardwick had seven as 10 different players scored for the Norse in the victory.

After hanging with the Norse (19-6) for three quarters, the Lumberjacks had no answer for them in the final period. Too often the Lumberjacks missed easy shots, missed rebounds on both ends or turned the ball over too easily. ACC also ran into foul trouble and had two players foul out in the fourth quarter.

While the Norse were able to make enough shots on the other end to pull ahead, ACC didn’t score again until there was 2:54 left in the contest; a span of almost seven minutes.

Livingston led ACC with 13 points, Jasmyn Schultz added 12 and Brooke Nguyen and Dakota Prevo each had nine.

Bay College led 29-26 at halftime and got an instant boost from Kraemer, who was forced to sit most of the second quarter with foul trouble. Just 22 seconds into the third quarter, Kraemer caught a pass in the paint, spun around an ACC defender and laid the ball in for a score, extending Bay College’s lead to five.

Bay College pushed its lead to as many as seven early in the third quarter, but ACC found a grove midway through the period and battled back to within a few points of the lead over several minutes. The Lumberjacks pulled ahead briefly on a three-pointer from Emma Jore with 1:30 left, but the Norse took the lead back after Brooke Dalgord went 4-for-4 at the free throw line.

Kraemer got hot early and scored 10 of Bay College’s first 12 points as the Norse built a 12-8 lead.

The Lumberjacks kept things close and played its best stretch of the game midway through the second quarter.

With Kraemer on the bench, Hardwick came through with a pair of key baskets for the Norse, Belleville and JuliAnn Wickman each made a shot and Kelsea Ackerman drained a pair of free throws.

The Lumberjacks will host their 10th annual Hopes for Hope pink games on Wednesday against Oakland. The ACC men play at 5:30 p.m. and the women will follow. The Norse host Gogebic Wednesday.

Bay College — Kraemer 20, M. Ackerman 1, Belleville 8, Welch 3, K. Ackerman 2, Hardwick 7, Wickman 5, Trudell 3, Dalgord 6, Hunter 2.

Alpena — Schultz 12, Livingston 13, Jore 6, Nguyen 9, Prevo 9.

The Bay College men’s basketball team beat the Alpena Community College Lumberjacks 81-72 here Monday night.

The Norse (17-9) overcame early foul trouble, picking up 10 in the first 11 minutes of the game. But their defense was stiff, holding Alpena to cold shooting and limiting second-chance opportunities to lead 40-27 at halftime. The Lumberjacks never came closer than within eight during the second half.

Christian Alexander led the way for the Norse, scoring 22 points and throwing down a dunk in the second half that helped the Norse build an 18-point lead. Ryan Robinette of Escanaba added 14 points, including three triples. Alfonzo Fields chipped in 12 points, while Logan Hardwick of Rapid River added 11.

It was the third time the Norse beat the Lumberjacks this season.

The Norse host Gogebic Community College Wednesday, and need a win to guarantee a first-round home playoff game.
