Braves’ girls upended
MARQUETTE — The Gladstone girls couldn’t quite hang with fourth-ranked Marquette for four quarters Tuesday night as they dropped a 57-45 basketball decision.
Gladstone was within 40-38 after the third stanza, but was outscored 17-7 during the final frame of the Great Northern Conference game.
“I was proud of the effort,” said Braves’ coach Eric Lundin. “We put together what I thought was a great game. They made some big threes during their fourth-quarter run.”
Amber Huebner led the Redettes (10-1 overall, 3-0 GNC) with 16 points and 11 steals.
Leigha Woelffer paced Gladstone (3-8 overall, 0-4 league) with 18 points and 14 rebounds despite a wrist injury in the second quarter.
“Leigha had a great game,” said Lundin. “She played bigger than she is. The injury hindered Leigha, but we never question her work ethic at all. Taylor Hunter had a great performance defensively and Alyssa Polley handled their full-court pressure the whole game.
“They’re very quick and Amber is probably one of the best players in the U.P.”
The Braves held a 34-29 rebounding advantage, hit 17-of-43 field goals and committed 23 turnovers. The Redettes sank 22-of-59 shots.
“The turnovers hurt us, but I thought our girls played pretty good defense,” said Lundin. “They also did a nice job inside.”
Gladstone, which also dropped the jayvee game, hosts Stephenson Thursday. Marquette hosts Escanaba Monday.
