April 24, 1979 — The Escanaba Eskymos opened their tennis season with a 5-2 victory over the Ishpeming Hematites. Defending Upper Peninsula singles champ Marc Osier blanked Ishpeming’s Marty Hintz 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 match. Esky’s Eric Lundeen did likewise at No. 2 in a 6-0, 6-0 conquest of Curt LeSage and Bob Fitch posted a pair of 6-0 victories over Craig Etelemaki in No. 4. John Lord added a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Randy Annala at No. 3 singles and Tony Altobelli and Paul Pertile provided the Eskymos with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Jeff Haines-Greg Anderson in No. 3 doubles.

The Mid Peninsula boys defeated Manistique 84-48 in a track and field opener. Duane Hammersmith led the Wolverines with victories in 100-yard dash at 10.6 seconds, high jump at six feet and long jump (20-0).

Manistique’s girls prevailed 68-55 with Diane Smith winning 110 hurdles (19.8) and 220s. Mid Pen’s Lonnie Arts copped the 440 (1:09.1) and 880 (2:54) and Carol Fick added victories in the 100 (12.2) and long jump 14-0.5.

April 25, 1979 — The Escanaba girls opened their season with an 82-42 triumph over Menominee. Lisa Benard led the Eskymos by winning high jump at 4-11, the 880 (2:39 and mile (5:54) on Esky’s cinder track. Lori Kaski took the 220 hurdles in a school-record 34 seconds and 110 hurdles (17.2).

Esky’s boys also won 78-54 with John Tolfa winning the 220 in 25 seconds and long jump (18-9). Brian Dupey copped the 120 hurdles (17.5) and 330s (43.1).

The Gladstone boys won five events, placing second in a quadrangular meet. Host Marquette scored 67 points, followed by Gladstone 47, Munising 29 and Negaunee 28. Bruce Holm took the 100-meter dash in (11.94), Tracy Ahola added a first for the Braves in the 200 (24.22). Allen Smith captured the 400 (54.69). Al Verbrigghe copped long jump (18-11) and Andy Wiltzius won shot put (46-6).

Ron Lindsey, Glenn Berhow and Kay Rice were crowned champions in the Escanaba Get Acquainted Racquetball tournament. Lindsey defeated Bob Rosemurgy 19-9, 15-8, 15-11, 12-15, 11-15 in the Class A men’s final. Berhow beat Doug Laviolette (15-3, 15-6, 15-1, 15-11) for the Class B crown and Rice topped Lynn Rosemurgy (15-2, 15-9) in the women’s championship match.
