Human remains recovered after Stephenson house fire

STEPHENSON — The Menominee County Sheriff’s Office reported human remains were recovered Thursday following a structure fire on Wednesday.
Menominee County Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters were notified Wednesday of a structure fire on Robert Street in Stephenson at 4 a.m.
Sheriff Darrin Kudwa stated that while no occupants of the home were located during firefighting efforts, one resident — a 38-year-old Stephenson man — remained unaccounted for.
The remains of the deceased were located in the debris on Thursday. Michigan State Police Fire Investigator and Canine Team assisted in the search.
Additional details will be released pending positive identification and notification to family members, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Menominee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by personnel from the Michigan State Police, Stephenson Fire Department, Mellen Township Fire Department, Mid-County Rescue Squad, Menominee County Sheriff’s Office Special Deputies, the Marinette County Medical Examiner’s Office and Menominee County 911.
This incident remains under investigation. The sheriff’s office asks anyone with information related to this fatality to contact the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office at (906) 863-4441.
