Escanaba eliminated in boys major division

NORWAY — Of the seven teams that started the District 10 Little League Tournament six still have them still have a chance at the ultimate dream. That dream unfortunately ended for Escanaba Sunday night as they fell 14-8 to Norway in the night cap. Gladstone defeated Schaffer 10-0 in the first game Sunday and Kingsford defeated Iron Mountain 9-0 in game two.

Gladstone erupted in the second inning scoring seven runs. Blake Mark got the scoring started on an RBI-single with the bases loaded and Charlie Beauchamp followed it up with a two-run double to put Gladstone up 3-0. Abel Ellison Joined in the fun with an RBI-single and Elliott Pankonien hit a two-run single to put Gladstone up 6-0. Panlonien was 3 for 3 on the day with two singles and a double.

“I just wanted to go out there and hit the ball the best I could,” Pankonien said. “We played amazing and our pitching was very good and I was just hoping we could get out of here quick.”

Schaffer had only three base runners in the game as one came on the only hit of the game by Jon Knauf and the other came on a walk drawn by Finn Bower.

Abel Belanger got the start for Gladstone allowing zero runs on one hit with six strikeouts and one walk.

Kingsford wasted no time against Iron Mountain as they put up six runs in the first inning with two of them coming on a two-run double by Luka Cory and Jacob Andes also doubled, scoring one.

Jade Unrien picked up the win for Kingsford as he allowed zero runs on zero hits with nine strikeouts and zero walks.

“The curveball was working well for me today,” Unrien said. “I just use the fastball to set up and get them with the curveball and we hit the ball well at the start of the game which was big.”

In the nightcap, Escanaba got on the board in the first inning scoring four runs as Norway pitcher Bryer Wolsker induced Brock Gagnon into a groundball for an out but had a run score and Hunter Ryno singled to score a run and Lincoln Wright had a two-run single to put Escanaba up 4-0.

Escanaba had a chance to add on to the lead in the second inning but a diving grab in the outfield by Wolsker ended the inning.

“I had to dive for it,” Wolsker said. “I thought I dropped it at first but I got it.”

Norway came back with one run in the first and one run in the second to cut the deficit in half.

In the third inning Norway took its first lead as Chase Freiberg had an RBI-single to cut the deficit to one then Norway tied the game as Freiberg scored on a wild pitch and Owen Vassar went to third then scored on an error to put Norway up 5-4.

That lead did not last long as Escanaba scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning put Escanaba up 6-5.

Norway answered in the fifth inning scoring eight runs. Wolsker scored the seventh run which was the winning run on an RBI-single by Kam Kraemer.

Escanaba pitcher Brock Gagnon saw the game get away from him on the mound as he allowed five runs on six hits with one strikeout and a walk. Dylan Cappeart struggled as well on the mound allowing six runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Liam Smith got the win for Norway allowing two runs on three hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

Waylon DeForge was 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

“We were down by four early and came back,” DeForge said. “They came back again but we got the bats going again and we played great and everyone did their job.
