New U.P. virus cases rise by 26 since Friday

ESCANABA — State data Tuesday showed two new confirmed COVID-19 positives in Delta County since last week and added a coronavirus-related death in Menominee County.

In its report, local health officials Tuesday listed two new confirmed case in Delta County, but Menominee County’s numbers were unchanged. The state earlier this month had posted another death in Menominee County only to withdraw it a week later.

The Public Health of Delta and Menominee Counties website Tuesday had Delta County at 3,354 confirmed positives, 719 probable cases and 94 deaths. Menominee County has had 1,806 confirmed positives, 332 probable and 40 deaths. The deaths included confirmed and probable.

At the state level Tuesday, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ coronavirus website had 26 new confirmed positives in the Upper Peninsula for the four-day period since Friday: seven in Gogebic County; six in Dickinson County; five in Chippewa County; two in Delta, Iron and Houghton counties; and one each in Marquette and Mackinac counties. The state recorded COVID deaths in Menominee, Ontonagon and Gogebic counties, but a note on the website indicated all had happened earlier and were only recently confirmed.

Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 20,199 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 445 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 142 confirmed cases and 32 probable, and one confirmed death and one probable death; Luce County, 227 confirmed cases and 254 probable, four confirmed deaths and one probable death; Alger County, 323 confirmed, 196 probable and three deaths, four probable; Schoolcraft County, 355 confirmed cases and 84 probable, four deaths and one probable; Ontonagon County, 423 confirmed, 61 probable and 21 deaths, one probable; Mackinac County, 462 confirmed cases and 256 probable, three deaths; Baraga County, 695 confirmed cases, 128 probable and 39 deaths; Iron County, 996 confirmed cases and 71 probable, 43 deaths and 10 probable; Gogebic County, 1,080 confirmed cases and 364 probable, 24 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 1,119 confirmed cases and 1,424 probable, and 28 deaths, six probable; Menominee County, 1,803 confirmed cases, 330 probable and 42 deaths, two probable; Dickinson County, 2,421 confirmed cases and 345 probable, 59 deaths and 15 probable; Houghton County, 2,538 confirmed cases, 607 probable, 35 deaths and eight probable; Delta County, 3,349 confirmed cases and 714 probable, 76 deaths and 19 probable; and Marquette County, 4,266 confirmed cases, 829 probable and 63 deaths, one probable. State figures are updated regularly but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Tuesday had 1,028 confirmed new coronavirus positives in Michigan since its last update Friday for a total to date of 898,626. The state Tuesday added 14 deaths attributed to the virus — with all 14 having occurred earlier and later verified through a vital records review — to reach 19,862.

The state earlier this month began posting new COVID data only twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays.
