MARINETTE — Marinette High School Principal Justin J. Bardowski has resigned after being charged with battery and disorderly conduct related to an alleged domestic assault involving his former girlfriend.

The Marinette School District confirmed Bardowski’s resignation in a statement sent to district families after the Board of Education accepted his resignation during a recent meeting.

“Dear Marinette School District Families, I am writing to share an update regarding Marinette High School Principal, Justin Bardowski,” the district stated in part. “Prior to Tuesday night’s Board of Education meeting, Mr. Bardowski submitted a letter of resignation. The board elected to act upon that resignation during open session. Because this is a personnel matter, we cannot share further details at this time.”

Bardowski, a Menominee resident who had been placed on administrative leave in January, pleaded not guilty May 18 in the Menominee Circuit Court to one count of battery and one count of disorderly conduct.

The battery charge, a Class A misdemeanor, carries a maximum penalty of up to nine months in jail and/or a $10,000 fine. The disorderly conduct charge, a Class B misdemeanor, is punishable by up to 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.

According to the criminal complaint, the charges stem from an alleged incident in October 2022 at the Four Seasons Resort in Pembine, Wis., where Bardowski allegedly assaulted his former girlfriend.

The woman told Marinette police she sustained a black eye and a split lip from the alleged assault.

Det. Jeremiah Haile of the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office reported in the criminal complaint that the woman said she photographed her injuries and sent the images to a neighbor before deleting them from her phone. The neighbor later confirmed receiving the photographs and corroborated the woman’s account, according to the complaint.

Another witness in the case, who picked up Bardowski’s former girlfriend the morning after the alleged incident, also described a prior encounter in which she allegedly witnessed Bardowski grab the woman by the shoulders and yell at her.

Bardowski did not respond to a request for comment from the Daily Press.

Court records show Bardowski is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 11 for a status conference. His attorney is listed as Lee D. Schuchart.
