9th Street project on schedule

Deborah Prescott | Daily Press Road construction equipment sits at the corner of Superior Avenue and 9th Street Tuesday afternoon. The 9th Street Project involves other avenues and streets, but starting in July the major part of 9th Street work will start.

GLADSTONE — With no obstacles in the way, the 9th Street project continues to progress as planned, according to Gladstone City Manager Eric Buckman.

“The project is on schedule,” said Buckman. “The way it’s going right now the contractors are going to have no problems meeting the finishing date.”

Crews are currently working on curbing and gutters along Superior Avenue and alley approaches on both sides of Delta Avenue. According to Buckman, after crews finish up side streets and alleys, the actual 9th Street part of the project will start in July.

“We have been posting updated information on our website to keep people informed. The contractor has been really good about telling residents what’s happening. I think it’s worked well,” said Buckman.

The Gladstone Downtown Development Authority teamed up with the City of Gladstone and created a scope of work containing a total reconstruction of 9th Street including work on storm drains, water lines, sewer lines, and major work on 4th Street and Delta Avenue.

The project originally stemmed from water issues in alleyways behind Delta Avenue, and clay pipe on 4th Street that needed to be replaced. Instead of putting a band-aid on street work that needed to be performed, the city determined work underneath the streets and avenues was crucial to provide the community with an infrastructure that will last up to 100 years.

As crews move from one area to another, residents with property impacted by the construction will continue to be informed by hand delivered notes, explaining what work is planned and for how long work will continue near their property.

“I’d like to thank everybody for their patience. The project is going good and I’m hoping it’ll be finished ahead of schedule,” Buckman said.

The project started April 15 and is scheduled to finish Nov. 14.
