Mary Jean (Gallop) Lyon

MANISTIQUE — Mary Jean (Gallop) Lyon, 88, of Manistique, Mich. passed away peacefully on April 20, 2024, with family members, Jean, Sarah, and Martha by her side. Mary was born on February 6, 1936, to Myron and Ruth Gallop of Wakefield, Massachusetts.

Mary attended school in Wakefield, Massachusetts and Mexico, Maine. She attended University of Maine at Orono where, in June of 1957, she received a bachelor of arts in English. She spent her career working as an instructor in a number of states including Maine, Vermont, Illinois, and Michigan. Her last teaching assignment was in Manistique, Michigan from 1979-1994.

Married June 15, 1957, to George H. Lyon Jr., raising a beautiful family of five children together.

Mary loved horses. She was a leader of the local 4-H horse club, raised Arabian horses, competed in long distance trail riding, hosted Girl Scout summer riding camp and many equine educational clinics with visiting clinicians.

Mary is survived by her children, Dale D. (Carrie) Lyon of Graham, Texas, Jean E. (Charlie) Willour of Manistique, Michigan, Christopher C. (Hollis) Lyon of San Antonio, Texas, Martha Johnson of Manistique, Michigan, and sister, Elizabeth A. Seltmann of West Brook, Connecticut and beloved daughter-in-law, Jeanne Lyon of Naperville, Illinois.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, George H. Lyon Jr., her son George H. Lyon III; her parents, Myron and Ruth Gallop; and her brother Richard W. Gallop.
