Airport to welcome Santa Claus

ESCANABA — Santa Claus is coming to town, and local children will have a chance to meet him this weekend at “Santa’s Fly From Nearby Fly-In.” The event will take place in the Delta County Airport terminal building from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

“Santa and Mrs. Claus told us here at the airport that they want to fly in to meet the kids in Delta County,” Airport Manager Andrea Nummilien said.

According to Nummilien, the event was first held at the airport last year. It was started by Delta Air Lines Supervisor Kylie Bray.

“They counted on about 100 kids showing up,” Nummilien said of 2018’s event.

However, “well over” this number of children ended up attending.

Local pilot Terry Glimm will bring Santa to the airport at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

“(He) has volunteered his services to fly Santa in,” Nummilien said.

Along with Santa, children will be able to meet Mrs. Claus and elves. A free photo booth will be available; participants must have an email address their photos can be sent to.

Hot cocoa and candy canes will be provided by Boreal Aviation during the event. Nummilien said attendees will have an opportunity to create Christmas crafts, as well.

“We’re going to make jingle necklaces and an ornament,” she said.

Families will also be able to help children in need while attending Santa’s Fly From Nearby Fly-In.

“We’ll have two bins set out for Toys for Tots,” Nummilien said.
