Gladstone Scholarship and Student Loan Foundation scholarships

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Scholarship and Student Loan Foundation (GSSLF) announced it will be awarding $140,000 in scholarships to this year’s graduating class. This is almost double the amount of previous years. GSSLF is able to make this possible from the generous gifts of former students and community members.

New this year will be several scholarships provided by the Katie VanDonsel Trust. VanDonsel was a Gladstone High School graduate. She was employed by the district for 41 years as the financial secretary. GSSLF will award several scholarships in her memory to students seeking a college degree in business or have a related interest in business. The Katie VanDonsel Trust monies also provide for a scholarship in the name of Eldon “Cappy” Keil. Keil coached basketball, football, and golf at Gladstone High School, and was inducted into the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame in 1974. In 2012, he was inducted into the Gladstone Sports Hall of Fame. The Cappy Keil Scholarship will be awarded to the top male athlete. In support of gender equity, the GSSLF will award a similar scholarship to the top female athlete.

The GSSLF will also have interest free educational loans available again this year. These loans can be used for college or trade school. Any Gladstone graduate is eligible to apply. A total of 80 loans are avai;able. The loan amount is $2000. Loans are interest free provided they are paid back concurrently one year after college graduation or student is no longer in school.
