Kwarciany gets STARR Scholarship

BARK RIVER — Bark River Harris High School senior Lauren Kwarciany, of Bark River, has been named a recipient of the STARR Charitable Foundation Scholarship.

The STARR Foundation Scholarship was established by an anonymous donor and includes tuition, room/board, books, fees and incidental expenses to attend Michigan State University for up to eight semesters. Students receiving this scholarship must be from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan or the State of Wyoming.

In order to qualify for the scholarship student must: (from the Starr Foundation website)

– Demonstrate academic interest and achievement by attaining grade point averages of 3.0 or better in an academic program rich in core subjects. Students with higher academic averages will not be given preference until the following personal traits have been demonstrated.

– Demonstrate by their record of performance and through recommendations that they are truly ambitious, talented, and enthusiastic in their academic and extracurricular activities.

– Exhibit leadership traits, to be honed by their academic studies that are predictive of their capacity to emerge as tomorrow’s leaders – leaders in their communities, businesses and professions.

– Demonstrate extraordinary skills, talents, curiosity to learn and grow, good moral character and unique characteristics that distinguish them from their peers. Manifest ethical behavior and good moral character at all times and in all circumstances.

Kwarciany is the daughter of Dr. Scott Kwarciany and Christina Kwarciany. She is a member of the U.P. Honors Band, National Honor Society and has participated in Quiz Bowl. She is the secretary of her class and is also a dual enrolled student at Bay College. Kwarciany is also a member of the Lions of Michigan All State Band and traveled to Milan, Italy last summer to perform at the Lions International Convention. Kwarciany has plans to travel with the band this summer to perform in Southern California. She has been named Student of the Week in multiple years while attending Bark River Harris High School and is currently ranked second in her graduating class with an over all GPA of 3.99.

She plans to attend Michigan State University in the fall of 2020 and pursue a career in medicine, with the hopes of specializing in surgery.
