ESCANABA — Last spring, the membership of GFWC-Escanaba Woman’s Club celebrated Literacy Month by ordering a book for every kindergarten student in the area to take home. Because of the pandemic, the club was not able to distribute the books in May.

GFWC-Escanaba Woman’s Club was able to distribute over 400 books to first graders during the last two weeks. The goal was to motivate children to want to read so they will practice reading independently and, thus, become fluent readers. That happens when children enjoy reading. There is no more important activity for preparing children to succeed as a reader than reading books together.

The funding for this literacy project came from donations received during last December’s “Party With a Purpose” Charity Ball. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the group is not able to have the 75th Charity Ball. However, if members of the community would like to contribute to the mission of GFWC, assisting with needs of the community and children of our area, donations can be sent to P.O. Box 41, Escanaba, MI, 49829.

The GFWC-Escanaba Woman’s Club meets the third Wednesday of each month via ZOOM until it is safe to meet in person. New members are always welcome. If you are interested in learning more about the organization, you may contact us via the Facebook page, “GFWC Escanaba.”
