Bay named ATD leader college of distinction

LONG BEACH, CA (February 19, 2019) – Achieving the Dream (ATD) announced 11 community colleges in the ATD Network have earned Leader College of Distinction status for achieving new, higher student outcomes and narrowing equity gaps. They include Bay College in Escanaba.

“The metrics ATD established for Leader College of Distinction are meant to encourage colleges to sustain aggressive efforts that result in far greater student success and equity,” said Dr. Karen A. Stout, president and CEO of Achieving the Dream. “The honor recognizes Network colleges that have lived their reform work over time and seen real improvements in student achievement across the institution.”

ATD created the Leader College of Distinction award in 2018 to recognize colleges that have continued striving to meet challenging student success goals, often earning Leader College status several times. Only colleges that have been Leader Colleges for three or more years were eligible to apply for this status.

“Bay College has focused on Student Success with Achieving the Dream for 12 years. The faculty and staff have spent significant time receiving professional development both internally and externally and developed initiatives which have resulted in significant improvements in completion rates for our students. This January we launched an Early Alert system that makes it easy for any employee to send information to the students’ co-advisor. These range from missing classes to life issues that can derail a student staying in college. This allows us to engage the student early and help them find solutions with the goal of the student completing a degree. Bay College faculty and staff genuinely care about every students’ success and they are helping it happen through great innovative, best practices developed and implemented with consistent results,” said Bay President Laura Coleman.
