Optimism is brewing for Escanaba boys track team

ESCANABA — They may be a little young, but there is optimism brewing among the ranks of the Escanaba boys’ track and field team as it begins a new season. Esky, which opens in today’s Gladstone Invitational at 3:30, has 28 on its roster. “We have a strong turnout among our younger guys,” coach Scott Dykema says. “Some of the juniors moved over from baseball and our underclassmen are pretty athletic. MANISTIQUE — The Manistique girls hope to build on their early-season success as they progress through this track and field season. Manistique, which has 34 on its team, earned top honors in the Fifth Annual Yooper Indoor Classic at Lake Superior State University March 21. HERMANSVILLE — The Manistique Emeralds reaped the benefits of a big second inning in a 15-6 baseball victory over Powers North Central in the second game of a season-opening doubleheader here Friday night. North Central hung on to win the opener 18-16. Manistique scored eight times in the second frame of the nightcap which was stopped after the third due to darkness.
