GREEN BAY — Spring may be here but it didn’t feel like it today as temperatures were in the 40’s with gusty winds as Manistique dropped a pair of games. The Emeralds lost 20-4 to Calumet and 25-15 to Green Bay Southwest. The Emeralds had no answer for Escanaba native Andrew Juntilla as ...
GLADSTONE — The Gladstone boys may not have won their track and field opener, but it was still a big day for them here Thursday. Junior Andrew Karl also made it an historic day by setting the school pole vault record with a winning leap of 14-5 in their own invitational. His latest effort was an inch higher than Josh Syverson’s best jump in 2009 and a personal record by two inches. Gladstone placed third with 125 points Thursday, 12 fewer than two-time champ Escanaba and nine behind runner-up Rapid River. “It was very important to get a meet in,” coach Gary Whitmer said. ...
RAPID RIVER — There was some concern about how a major snowstorm in mid-March and a long winter would affect area spring sports athletes. “That storm hit us pretty good,” Rapid River boys’ track and field coach Steve Ostrenga said. “It delayed some things, but everybody’s in the same boat.” Rapid River made up for lost time Thursday by finishing runner-up, just three points behind Escanaba (137-134), in the Gladstone Invitational. The Rockets, hoping that’s a sign of things to come, return to Gladstone for Tuesday’s Delta County Invitational Tuesday at 3:30 ...
ESCANABA — With a track and field meet under their belts, the Holy Name Crusaders look to improve through the season. The Crusaders, who opened in Thursday’s Gladstone Invitation, have nine girls and five boys on their roster. Senior Michael Rexford overcame adversity while winning the boys’ long jump at 18-9. “He’s an excellent athlete,” coach Keith Whitman said. “I was impressed with his performance, but told him not to do anything during the weekend. We don’t want him to risk permanent injury.” Holy Name returns to Gladstone for Tuesday’s Delta County ...
GREEN BAY — The Bayport Pirates proved to be too much for the Escanaba Eskymos here Thursday as they fell 16-7. The Eskymos trailed 8-7 going into the bottom of the fourth inning but gave up eight runs over the next two innings. The Pirates got on the board in the bottom of the first as ...
WELLS — The Bay College Norse picked up their second win of the season here Thursday as they defeated Delta College 15-8 in game two and dropped game one 8-5. Harrison Haigh posted four runs on three hits in the contest including a two-run home run in the first inning of game two to put the Norse up 2-0. “He got the scoring going for us in that game,” Norse coach Mike Pankow said. “He has been struggling with an injury and today he showed what we know he can do when he is fully healthy.” The Norse collected 14 hits in the game while the Pioneers had 10 hits. In the top ...
