Flashback Sept. 28-Oct. 4

Oct. 1, 1980 — The Escanaba girls remained undefeated, posting a 65-43 basketball victory over the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils. Shelley Livermore scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Eskymos. Sandy Davison also hit 14 points. Jeanne Courneene added 12 points and Michelle Hall had 13 rebounds.

The Powers North Central Jets improved to 5-0 in the Skyline Conference with a 64-61 triumph over the Republic-Michigamme Hawks. Joanne Kleiman paced the Jets with 17 points. Lori Wentland tallied 14 and Richelle Barker finished with 12. Linda Wuokko led the Hawks with 27 and Mary Jo Anttila added 22.

Carney-Nadeau cruised past Crystal Falls Forest Park 59-37. Kelly Strahl and Nicki Szapa led the Wolves with 15 points each. Tammy Szapa added 10 points and 11 boards. Jodie Perras also had 10 points.

Oct. 3, 1980 — The Big Bay de Noc boys won a triangular cross country meet with 30 points. They were followed by Rock Mid Peninsula 39 and Rapid River 53. Mid Pen’s Duane Verbrigghe copped the three-mile race in 16:53. The Mid Pen girls won with Big Bay’s Evie Dalgord earning top individual honors at 21:57.

Oct. 4, 1980 — The Escanaba Eskymos clinched at least a share of the Great Northern Conference football title in a 42-13 conquest of West Iron County. Ron Gerstner ran for 139 yards and three touchdowns, scoring from 60 yards and twice from five yards. Steve Rosemurgy caught a 26-yard TD pass from Dick Severinsen. Jim Grenier scored on a 39-yard punt return and John Tolfa added a nine-yard TD run.

The Trenary Comets posted their first basketball victory this season in a 79-19 rout of the Grand Marais Polar Bears. Pam Michael tossed in 30 points. Robin Thompson hit 22 and Rhonda Ellis and Lavon Kayser added 10 apiece.

Sept. 28, 1985 — Nose tackle Craig Ness scored from six yards on a blocked punt, paving the way for Escanaba’s 21-7 football triumph over the Alpena Wildcats. Paul Rodman tossed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Bill Carlson and added a two-yard TD pass to Brian Franks.

Ron Kleiman rushed for 236 yards and five TDs on 28 carries, leading the Bark River-Harris Broncos past the Powers North Central Jets 50-6. Jerry McNally added 105 in nine attempts in the Broncos’ Wolverine Conference opener.

Sept. 30, 1985 — The Gladstone Braves remained unbeaten in five games, rolling past Marquette 27-0. Brian Pelon completed 12-of-16 passes for 144 yards and four TDs and R.Troy Carlson ran for 141.

Oct. 2, 1985 — Jay Richer nearly made a wrong turn on his home course, but corrected the error in plenty of time to take the boys’ cross country title in the 21st Annual Gladstone Invitational. He toured the hilly 3.1-mile course in 15:37 for his first varsity victory, seven seconds ahead of Marquette’s Geoff Osowski. Gladstone’s Ray Theoret placed fourth and Shane Lundin took sixth. Marquette copped the Class A-B title with 31 points, followed by Gladstone 37 and Green Bay East 69.

The Marquette girls took six of the top seven places and scored 17 points. They were followed by Escanaba 55 and Menominee 81. Marquette’s Laura Couchlin won in 19 minutes and Esky’s Lorraine Boucher took fourth at 19:56. Becky Martineau took eighth, Nancy Picord was 10th and Monica Metivier was 12th.

The Manistique girls won their third straight road contest, posting a 50-40 basketball victory over the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears. Amy Hastings led the Emeralds with 19 points and 19
