HARRIS — The Gladstone boys continued to dominate the Delta County Invitational track and field meet here Thursday by scoring 221 points.

Gladstone, which clearly held the upper hand in recent years, was followed by Bark River-Harris 104, Escanaba 83 and Rapid River 81.

The Braves grabbed the top four spots in the 200-meter dash and placed four in the top five in the 100.

Braves’ senior Nate Young won the 100 in 11.72 seconds and classmate Eli Berthaume copped the 200 (24.58).

Young also helped the Braves take both sprint relays and senior Luke Bracket swept the hurdle races, taking the 110s (15.77) and 300s (42.71).

“This was really a solid day for our team,” Braves’ coach Gary Whitmer said. “I think our depth really helped us, especially in the sprints and taking third in the open 1600 and 3200 also helped us and Luke won the hurdles by a lot. I think this gives us momentum going into the Marquette meet (on Tuesday).”

Gladstone senior Josh Racine swept the weight events, taking shot put (40-10) and discus (116-1).

Sophomore Mason Peltin added a first in high jump (6-0). Junior Evan Woelffer took the long jump (18-3.5) and senior teammate Kostya Olsen and Rapid River junior Clay Christoff shared first in pole vault (11-0).

Bark River-Harris set another school record in the 3200 relay in 9:11.28, shattering its previous-best (9:45.39) in Sault Ste. Marie three weeks ago.

Junior Wes Knauf provided the Broncos with a first in the 3200 (11:18.28). Freshman brother Ben Knauf won the 1600 (5:01.27) and Wes was runner-up (5:05.1).

“Setting the school record in the Sault really motivated us,” Wes said. “Today after the first time around the track, I didn’t think we were going to get it. Credit goes to our Lord, Jesus Christ. Without Him none of this would be possible. We have a lot of potential. Ben and I run together and push each other. We had little training last week due to the weather but ramped up our intensity. I think this is going to be an exciting season for our school.”

Esky was runner-up in the 3200 relay (9:33.97) and Hannahville placed third in a school-record 9:43.03.

Comprising Hannahville’s relay were juniors Jayden Sagataw, Connor LaFave, Jesse Wabanimkee and freshman Miles Halfaday.

“It was really great to get the record, but it was kind of unexpected,” Sagataw said. “We had two new 800 runners today. We tried to stay with the runners in front of us and finish hard.”

LaFave, who filled in for sophomore Sam Beaver, ran the second leg.

“We had nobody else to do it,” LaFave said. “The first lap felt good, then I started dying halfway through the second. Our coach tried to encourage me. I tried to pick it up, but just didn’t have it in the end. The 800 is not my race, although I’m so glad we got the school record.”

Halfaday also enjoyed the experience.

“It was fun,” he said. “This is a confidence boost for us. It just feels great to get the school record.”

Wabanimkee had similar thoughts.

“This is a big boost of confidence,” he said. “This is exciting for our athletes.”

Senior Ben Sands provided Esky with a first in the 400 (56.7) and sophomore Adam Schroeder copped the 800 (2:16.84).
