Productive day for girls competing at U.P. Track Finals

Adam Hinch Daily Press Stephenson girls set school record in the 4x800 meter relay event at the U.P. Finals.

KINGSFORD — It was a productive day for girls runners from the U.P. with Marquette winning the division 1 title with 130 points, Negaunee took second place with 96 points and Sault Ste. Marie was third with 83 points at the U.P. track finals in Kingsford Saturday.

Bark River-Harris retained the Division 2 title with 100 points, Ishpeming took second with 87 points and Manistique came in third with 76 points.

Lake Linden-Hubbell tied with Stephenson for the Division 3 title with 72 points each followed by Brimley with 56 points.

It was a record breaking day for Danica Shamion of West Iron County winning the 100 meter, 200 meter, 400 meter and taking second in the high jump. Shamion set the All-Time U.P. record in the 400 meter with a time of 57.18, held previously by Escanaba’s Stephanie Ostrenga (D1) at 57.25 and her own mark of 58.77 and also set the U.P. record in the 200 meter with a time of 26.34 surpassing Dani Gange of Norway with a time of 26.42. “It was nice out very warm but good conditions. I sprinted the entire 400 meter very rewarding to set a U.P. record especially to do it at the finals is extremely rewarding,” Shamion said.

Marquette’s Julia Ott won the 100 meter with a time 12.67. “It was a little warm out today but i felt good defiantly special to win this one,” Ott said. Ott also picked up wins in the 200 meter and 4×100 relay events.

Emily Jokela had a great day winning in four events including thee 100 meter where she posted a time of 13.08. “It felt great took third last year it was rewarding to come back this year and get the win, Jokela said. Jokela also broke the record in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 45.63 surpassing Lori Wardynski of Ontonogon who had a time of 47.27.

Ishpeming’s Lola Korpi won all four of her events including the 800 meter and 1600 meter as well as the 3200 meter and 4×800 relay events. “It felt great out there today I felt confident going into my events and my 1600 race was close but I love the close races that makes the win more special to me,” Korpi said.

Stephenson girls Faith Cappaert, Joelle Beaudo, Kayela Putnam and Jada Kuntze set the school record in the 4×800 meter relay with a time of 10:49.67. “It feels great to be out here running with my teammates,” Cappaert said.

It was a good day for Newberry’s Kaylen Clark, picking up wins in the 1600 meter and 3200 meter events. ” I felt really good going into my events and was finally able to take the win in the 1600 meter run, it has taken me three years to get this one and it feels really special to get this one in my senior year,” Clark said.

Carney-Nadeau came away with a solid performance coming in ninth as a team with 28 points and saw Mariska Laurila pick up the win in the discus with a throw of 103-03 and came in second in the shot put with a throw of 31-08.

Overall it was a very productive day for the girls in all divisions with 38 different schools receiving points in the meet.
