Eskymos sweep Negaunee
NEGAUNEE — The Escanaba softball team picked up two mercy-shortened wins Wednesday in Negaunee against Negaunee.
The Eskymos finished the opener 11-0 in six innings and the nightcap 15-0 in four.
Esky jumped ahead early in both games, but the nightcap saw a three-run lead after the first and, after adding two in the third, sealing the game with an explosive 10-run fourth.
“For as well as we played in game one, game two was an offensive explosion,” Esky coach Andy Fields said. “We drove the ball really well up and down the lineup. (It was) highlighted by several home runs but none bigger than McKayla Mott’s homerun that cleared two fences and a row of cars. That home run was the longest home run I’ve seen in high school softball. The back fence was labeled at 252 (feet), and there were cars parked against that fence, which were easily cleared. It was an absolute blast.”
Grayson LaMarche stood on the mound for the entirety, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out seven.
Esky’s Erica Moore collected four RBIs and two hits, and Carsyn Segorski finished the nightcap with three RBIs and three hits. Carney Salo, Lizzy Sliva and Mott all notched two RBIs.
In the opener, the Eskymos earned five runs in the first, one in the fourth and five more in the sixth to seal the game.
Mott toed the rubber, allowing only two hits while striking out 12.
Salo earned four RBIs and two hits. Anna Boutilier notched two RBIs and two hits.
“Negaunee is a well-coached team,” Fields said. “McKayla was able to keep their batters off balance.”
Escanaba travels to the Blue Chip Tourney in Grand Rapids Saturday.
