Esky softball wins in Wis.
ASHWAUBENON, Wis. — Of the three games the Escanaba softball team was slated to play Saturday in Ashwaubenon, Wis., one was called after the second due to weather and another completely canceled.
The Eskymos won the only official game left on the books 4-2 against Bay Port.
Entering the third inning down one to the previously undefeated Pirates, who were ranked third in Division 1 in Wisconsin, Paxton Bullen was second up to the plate and tied the game up on a homer over the right field fence.
Shortly after, with two outs, Lizzy Sliva didn’t want to be left out and smashed one of her own over the center field fence to make it 2-1.
“The big home runs by Paxton and Lizzy really changed the momentum of the game,” Esky coach Andy Fields said. “Big hits by both girls.”
In the top of the fifth, with two on base and two outs, McKayla Mott’s fly double drove in Bullen and Carsyn Segorski to seal the game for the Eskymos 4-2 despite the Pirates adding one more in the bottom of the seventh.
“Overall, we are very happy with the way the girls played,” Fields said. “We played a near-flawless game, played small ball, hit for power, pitched well and play great on defense.”
Mott earned the win in relief over five innings, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out four. Grayson LaMarche pitched the first two, allowing one hit, one run and one walk while striking out three.
Mott also notched two RBIs and one hit, and Bullen and Sliva each picked up an RBI apiece. Bullen also collected three hits.
Escanaba multi-sport athlete Carney Salo capped off her return week from ACL surgery with a multi-hit weekend.
“Carney has worked her butt off to get back,” Fields said. “I’m super proud of her. It’s been a struggle, and for her to have a multi-hit game today was big!”
The second game, where Bullen and Sliva each picked up another homer apiece, against Kimberly was called after the second inning.
