Escanaba baseball sweeps Superior Central

ESCANABA — A productive fifth inning helped Escanaba’s cause here Monday night in an 11-1 victory over Superior Central in the second game of a baseball doubleheader.

The Eskymos also won the opener 4-0, three days after they split a twinbill at Cheboygan.

“I think that gave us a lot of momentum,” said Esky coach Scott Hanson. “I’m happy with the way we’re playing right now. We saw 87 and 88 (mph pitching) pretty regularly over there.”

Esky led 6-1 after four innings before scoring five times in the fifth in the second game.

Matt Kaven scored on a wild pitch, and Nick Chiu made it 8-1 on a fielding error.

Ben Johnson and Eli Gardner then drew a bases-loaded walk, and Chase Cloutier scored on a wild pitch to end the contest.

Adam Willette tossed a three-hitter and losing pitcher Lucas Swetich, allowing six runs on six hits through four innings.

Trent Rutter relieved in the fifth but walked five batters and surrendered five runs.

“We’re still trying to get healthy and brought up some young kids to pitch,” said Cougars’ coach Walt Smith. “We had 4-5 errors and made too many baserunning mistakes. I like the way they run the bases and play the game. They’re a real good team.”

Lancour and Bon LaChance drove in two runs each, and Matt Zimmerman narrowly missed a home run.

Esky scored first on a fielding error in the opener’s opening frame.

A two-run double by LaChance gave the Eskymos a three-run cushion in the third, and a ground out by Johnson made it 4-0.

Johnson threw a three-hitter, and Hayden Rockhill, who worked five frames, took the loss. He fanned nine and allowed two hits.

“Hayden threw a real nice game,” said Smith. “We had runners on in one inning, then they made a double play which took us out of the (sixth) inning.”

Johnson walked Zach Frusti, and Bill Crisp reached on an error in the sixth. Johnson then ended the threat by catching Frusti while he was trying to score and throwing out Crisp at second.

“Rockhill threw a real good game for them, and Ben had back-to-back starts and is doing a good job,” said Hanson. “I thought Adam Willette pitched well in the second game. In general, we’re pitching better, and our defense has gotten better.”

The Eskymos host Norway in a single game Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The Cougars host Manistique for a doubleheader Thursday at 4.

Starting at $4.00/week.
