Braves edge Norway

GLADSTONE — Opportunity knocked for the Gladstone Braves as they squeezed past the Norway Knights 7-6 in a non-conference baseball game here Tuesday.

Back-to-back fielding errors opened the door for the Braves in the bottom of the seventh inning as Noah Peterson dashed across the plate with the game-winner.

Freshman Casey Alworden scored the tying run in the seventh while Hunter Solis got caught in a rundown between first and second base, resulting in the Braves’ first out in that inning.

Brennan Detiege then reached on a fielding miscue moments before Peterson was inserted as a pinch runner.

“Norway has a good ball club,” said Braves coach Joe Darmogray. “They always play tough. They brought out the best in us at times and the worst in us at other times. To come back and win this one says a lot about the kids. They never gave up. Although, we need to clean up some things.”

The Knights, who trailed 4-0 after four, answered with four runs on their own in the fifth, including Case Carlson’s game-tying single to rightfield.

Austin Bagwell put the Braves back in front on a fielder’s choice in the sixth.

Bagwell and Tyler Damogray led off the sixth with walks. Cam Kelly was then intentionally walked to load the bases with one out prior, setting the stage for Bagwell’s go-ahead run.

Norway, which split a twinbill at North Central Monday, regained the lead on Carlson’s two-run double along the rightfield line in the seventh this time.

“We competed tonight,” said Norway coach Tony Adams. “We had some momentum, but walks have been hurting us all year. It was disappointing the way we played last night. We took a big step forward today.”

Gladstone gained the upper hand in the first by taking advantage of three walks.

Cam Kelly pitched five innings before running into problems in the sixth. John Soderman took the win in relief.

“Cam pitched great,” said Darmogray. “We just didn’t give him as much help as we should. We always tell the pitchers to trust the defense, only it let us down at times today.”

The Braves host Kingsford tonight at 6, then finish their regular season at Green Bay Southwest Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Norway, which stranded baserunners on second and third in the seventh, visits Escanaba tonight at 7:30.

Starting at $3.50/week.
