Braves corral Broncos in four

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Braves had an all-around solid performance Tuesday afternoon as they defeated the Bark River-Harris Broncos 11-0 via the mercy rule after four innings in Gladstone.

In addition to collecting 11 hits, the Braves took full advantage of four Bronco errors to bust the game open and end things early.

“Big difference from this game to the last game (a 9-8 loss against Iron Mountain last week),” said Braves coach Joe Darmogrey. “The kids came out. They’ve been struggling a little bit with attitude in practice lately, and we kind of got adjusted and told them to bring everything they’ve got today. And, I think they did.”

The attitude issue, Darmogrey said, has mostly stemmed from, what most area teams are dealing with, a lack of being able to practice and play outside due to cold, rainy and snowy weather.

“That’s it,” he said. “I think they’re all sick of being inside, and I don’t blame them. We’d only been outside for one game, and we didn’t really show up for it, and we practiced for one hour outside so far.

“So, this was a big difference (mentally). I asked the kids yesterday — because we knew it was going to be cold — if they wanted to play, and they said yes. So, that’s good, and I’m glad they brought it.”

Noah Peterson started atop the mound for the Braves and threw 36 pitches through two innings to earn the win.

Gavin Frossard took over in the third and finished the game with 24 pitches.

Each gave up one hit and a walk as Peterson had two strikeouts and Frossard one.

“The pitchers pitched great,” said Darmogrey. “They did what I wanted them to do. I wanted to make sure they were under their pitch count, so we could have them the rest of the week with a couple more games coming up.”

Travis Mack opened the game pitching for BR-H and threw through one and two-thirds innings. Mack gave up nine total runs — five earned — off of five hits. He struck out two Braves and put two on with walks.

Mason Bower came in for Mack on the mound in the third inning following a team mound visit with coach Al Botwright.

Bower also struck out two and walked two as he allowed six hits for two earned runs.

“We played a quality opponent today,” Botwright commented after the game. “You’ve got to give Gladstone a whole bunch of credit. They pitched well, they hit well, and they fielded the ball well.

“I would say, I thought we pitched pretty well. I don’t think that was our problem at all. We didn’t make enough plays as a start and made too many errors, too.

Like the Braves, and other teams, The Broncos have also been forced to keep practice indoors, with their only outdoors experience thus far this season coming in an 11-1 loss against Kingsford.

“We haven’t had an outside practice yet,” Broncos coach Al Botwright commented. “I think Gladstone is in the same boat — and, probably, much of the U.P. is in the same boat — so we’re not going to use that as an excuse. We definitely expect to play better in the near future, but we’re definitely ironing out a few kinks.”

The Broncos will face the North Central Jets Friday while the Braves — who also won the evening’s JV game 20-10 — play a doubleheader against Negaunee Thursday before a Friday night rivalry game against the Eskymos in Escanaba.

Starting at $4.00/week.
