Hannahville splits O.C.
HANNAHVILLE — The Hannahville boys did what they like to do best here Friday in a 75-59 basketball triumph over Bay Mills Ojibwe Charter.
A valiant effort by the Hannahville girls came up a little short in a 42-35 loss to the Eagles.
The Hannahville boys ran the floor all afternoon while improving to 14-0 overall and 11-0 in the Northern Lights League.
“That’s what we’ve been doing all year,” said Hannahville coach Josh Eagle. “The guys were in the gym all summer which makes coaching them a lot easier. They’re working on keeping a positive attitude and their conduct in class. We have five guys who can put up 20 points on any given day or night. This was a good game. Ojibwe gave us a good test before next weekend’s league tournament (at Rudyard).”
The Soaring Eagles scored the first 10 points and raced to a 23-11 lead after the first quarter.
Ojibwe (7-5 overall) trimmed its deficit to 27-22 on a 22-foot jump shot from the right wing by Joey Adkins-Annand three minutes into the second frame.
Hannahville answered with a 12-3, surging to a 39-25 halftime advantage on a fast break layup by Damon Sagataw.
Mequon Jackson opened the third stanza with a set shot inside the free throw circle for a 41-25 cushion.
The Eagles responded with an 8-0 run, shaving their deficit to 41-33 on a putback by Billy Parish.
Hannahville again extended its lead, using a 12-2 run to gain an insurmountable 53-35 advantage after the third.
Damon Sagataw scored 19 points. Gabe Sagataw added 17. Warren Gustafson tallied 11, and Jackson had 10 for the Soaring Eagles, who committed 17 turnovers.
Marquis Harmon hit 19, Pascuzzi hit 17, and Parish had 16 for Ojibwe, which had 20 miscues.
Despite being undefeated, Eagle said the Soaring Eagles have plenty of work to do.
“We have a long way to go on defense and rebounding,” he added. “We need to work on boxing out.”
Hannahville hosts Paradise Tuesday.
in the girls’ contest, Sienna Kuzmik sank a 20-foot set shot to give Ojibwe a 29-16 cushion with five minutes, eight seconds left in the third quarter.
The Soaring Eagles responded with seven unanswered points, climbing within 31-26 on a 15-foot set shot by Ava Eagle at 2:40.
Hannahville was within 37-33 following Eagle’s running eight-foot jumper with 3:25 left in the contest but was unable to get any closer.
The teams combined for 58 turnovers, including 31 by Ojibwe.
Ashlynn Turner scored 17 points, and Kuzmik finished with 14 for Ojibwe. Eagle and Dezirae Lattergrass had 11 apiece for Hannahville.
In Thursday’s games, Gabe Sagataw scored 16 points in a 56-42 triumph for the boys, and the Ojibwe girls won 45-32.
The Soaring Eagles resume in this weekend’s league tourney.
