Broncos grapplers take third district

HARRIS — North Central freshman Madalynn Corrigan shined at a big moment for the Bark River-Harris wrestlers here Wednesday night.

Corrigan, who wrestles at BR-H through a co-op venture, helped the Broncos secure their third straight Division 4 district title in a 54-27 triumph over the Manistique Emeralds.

The Emeralds were still mathematically alive before Corrigan pinned freshman Kaleb Baker two minutes, 32 seconds into a 125-pound match, giving the Broncos an insurmountable 42-21 advantage.

“I wasn’t paying attention to the score,” she said. “I usually don’t. I just wrestle to have fun. I wrestled him at the U.P. Championships (Jan. 22 in Marquette) and won 7-6. That gave me a big boost because I knew I could beat him. I hadn’t wrestled since fourth grade. I played basketball for the past four years and was nervous about coming back to wrestling. I was scared I wouldn’t do that good.”

The victory sends the Broncos to Wednesday’s team regional at Charlevoix where they’ll face the winner of the Gwinn district.

“Maddy is a warrior,” said BR-H coach Joe Racicot. “She gives it her all every time. She has the heart of a lion and is able to hang with the guys and sometimes pin them. That was definitely a crucial part of the meet. To see that mathematical equation early is always nice.”

Junior Austin Mischel (145) got Manistique on the board first by pinning sophomore Evan Siedlecki in 1:26.

Classmate Jacob Berry (152) then gave the Emeralds a nine-point cushion by taking a 7-0 decision from junior David Mosse.

“We told David as a coaching staff ‘if you can’t win it, don’t get pinned. Give up as few points as possible to help the team,'” said Racicot. “David is a fast, strong kid. He’s one of the hardest workers in practice and has come a long way.”

Junior Guerin DeForest (160) got the Broncos on the board by pinning Emeralds’ junior Kirk Slater in 48 seconds and senior Wyatt Raab pinned junior Ross Pugh at 1:02, giving BR-H a 12-9 lead.

“We’re fortunate enough to have enough kids to fill the holes,” said Raab. “Lot of other schools don’t have the numbers. The kids we bring in through co-op really helps.

“Maddy has come a long way. She’s probably the most consistent and hardest working wrestler on the team and keeps her weight under control. Jacob Berry is a good wrestler and has pinned David twice before. David helped the team a lot by not giving up the pin.”

Junior Dillon Hayes (112) brought the Emeralds within 30-21 by pinning sophomore Evan Siedlecki in 64 seconds.

Senior Avry Corrigan (119) pinned Reese McQuarrie 1:26 into the next bout, providing the Broncos with a 36-21 cushion.

“I thought we did well,” said Emeralds’ coach Mat Gonzalez. “We just have to keep working and get ready for the individual district (Saturday at Westwood). We have to finetune the little things. By getting to the district final we were able to get more mat time. Hopefully, this will give our kids some motivation. Their guy avoiding the pin at 152 made a little bit of difference. In the last couple years, we’ve had pretty good numbers which gives us something to build on.”

In the semifinals, BR-H eliminated Newberry 70-12 and Manistique topped Munising 42-24.

“We had an obligation to come over here and make a good showing,” said Newberry coach Bob Bowler. “This was a good warm-up for Saturday. We didn’t want to go a whole week without matches. In some ways, this year has been more difficult than last year. We’re still dealing with Covid. It’s nice to see the Manistique and Bark River-Harris programs growing. It gives us hope that we can do the same.”
