Minimal movement in UPSSA poll
ESCANABA — It’s a tight voting race in the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association high school basketball poll, with only the smallest movement in the recently released poll.
In Division 1-3 boys, Kingsford (7-2 after Monday’s loss against Menominee) secured enough votes — after a 76-16 win against North Dickinson Thursday — to tie Escanaba (6-3) for second. Menominee (10-1 after Monday’s win) retained the top spot.
Jeffers (7-1) supplanted Westwood (6-2) — who fell to fifth, moving up one spot to fourth.
Rudyard (8-0) broke a second-place tie with North Central (9-1) — who was in third this week — to move into a first-place tie with Ewen-Trout Creek (7-0).
Munising (9-1) and Wakefield-Marenisco (6-1) rounded out the poll.
On the girls’ side, Calumet (9-0) still reigned supreme over Division 1-3, followed by Houghton (11-1), Sault Ste. Marie (8-3) and St. Ignace (8-2), none of whom moved.
Hancock (9-2) and Negaunee (10-4) entered the poll tied for fifth.
The top three spots in Division 4 remained the same — Baraga (10-1), Carney-Nadeau (8-1) and Pickford (6-1).
Finishing off the girls’ poll was a three-way tie for fourth between Ewen-Trout Creek (6-3), Rudyard (3-3) and North Dickinson (7-3).
