LaBonte, Jets win with last second free throw

POWERS — Overtime was avoided in Powers during a barn burner between the Jets and Stephenson. North Central’s Zoe LaBonte nailed a final free throw with no time left on the clock to earn the Jets a 28-27 win Tuesday.

“It was a low scoring affair,” Jets coach Dave Florenski said. “Stephenson, they kinda ran 1-3-1 half-court trap but sat back in a 2-3 zone for most of the night. We just couldn’t really get anything going until that fourth quarter.”

Florenski puts the difference in the fourth quarter down to being able to feed the ball.

“We were able to get the ball down to Shea Lacoursier,” he said. “She’s our post player, and she was held scoreless until that quarter then scored six there (in the fourth).”

The Jets’ displayed grit also added to Florenski’s happiness beyond just having a win.

“(I’m happy with their) resilience, and it’s a building block for our program,” he said.

North Central, which lost the JV game, travels to Munising Friday.
