Big Bay de Noc sophomore Destiney Bleau shines at Manistique Invite
MANISTIQUE — Big Bay de Noc sophomore Destiny Bleau put on quite a performance here Tuesday, winning four events in the Manistique Kiwanis Invitational track and field meet.
Bleau copped the 400-meter run in a school-record 1:00.18 and the 100 (13.02), 200 (26.57) and high jump at five feet on this cloudy and seasonably-cool afternoon.
“Destiny is once in a lifetime athlete,” Big Bay coach Angie LaLonde said. “We’re glad to have her on our team. This was the first time she ran the 400 and gets a school record. I’m happy with the way our kids performed. We had a lot of personal-bests. It’s such a short season with some of the weather we’ve had.”
Manistique kept the championship trophy at home, scoring 122 points. The Emeralds were followed by Newberry 88, Pickford 67, Big Bay 65 and Bark River-Harris 61.
“We’re deep and grabbing points everywhere we can,” Emeralds’ coach Erik Mason said. “We felt comfortable coming into this meet. We figured Pickford and Newberry would be fighting for points in the distances. The girls exceeded expectations. We got good points in shot put and discus and we put Maya (Carlson) in the 3200 to get some points.”
The Pickford boys ran away with the title by scoring 169 points. Ishpeming squeezed past BR-H 61-60 for runner-up honors and Superior Central edged Manistique 56-54 for fourth place.
Senior Caraghan Thill provided the Big Bay girls with a first in the 300 hurdles at 51.07, followed by Munising sophomore Addie Bowerman (51.49) and BR-H junior Emma Zawada (52.21).
Zawada won long jump with a personal-best leap of 14-7 and helped the Broncos take the 800 relay (1:57.03) and place second in the 400 relay (54.24).
“I tried to go fast on the runway, but still need to work on my steps,” she said. “The wind definitely slowed me down in the 400 and hurdles. Although, this is still a confidence boost.”
Manistique senior Kyra Carlson captured pole vault at nine feet and BR-H junior Mira Johnson was runner-up (8-6).
“It was a good day, although it was a little shaky pole vaulting,” Carlson said. “Once I cleared nine feet, I decided to go up to 10 and came close on all three jumps. My legs were tired.”
Manistique senior Gwen Brewster won shot put (30-8) and placed third in discus (80-3).
Freshman teammate Leah Joslin added a first in the 100 hurdles (18.64), edging Munising sophomore Addie Bowerman by .1 second, and led off the winning 400 relay (53.28).
Pickford senior Talya Schreiber captured the 1600 in a school-record 5:05.44 and took the 3200 (11:05.01) and 800 (2:24.14).
BR-H junior Ben Knauf became a double-winner, taking the boys’ 800 (2:09) and 1600 (4:55.9) and freshman Sam Varoni took first in pole vault (10-0).
“I was hoping to go under five minutes today,” Knauf said. “I felt a lot stronger than last week. I just tried to get a little bit ahead and it helped to get the lead.”
Manistique junior Sam Moose swept the boys’ weight events, winning shot put (44-8) and discus (117-9).
Pickford senior Gunner Bennin copped the 100 (11.67) and 200 (23.46) and anchored the winning 800 relay (1:37.58).
Senior teammate John Anderson took the 110 hurdles (15.93), high jump (6-6) and long jump (19-4½).
Junior Will Spranger, who was Superior Central’s leader, placed second in the 200 (23.63) and 300 hurdles (45.15) and shared the runner-up spot with Newberry freshman Simon Whalen at 5-4.
Classmate Connor Blomgren took second in shot (40-4½) and disc (105-5).
