Maroons cruise to win over Broncos

BARK RIVER — It was a tough night on the softball diamond for the Bark River-Harris Broncos here Monday as they fell to the Menominee Maroons 21-5 in a non-conference game.

The first inning offered a sign of things to come as the Maroons cashed in on three errors and Arianna Johnson’s three-run homer for a 5-0 lead.

“They timed our pitching pretty good and hit the ball hard,” BR-H coach Rob Ardnt said. “We told the girls that’s where our standard needs to get to. It’s a work in progress.”

The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader. The second game, however, was rained out.

BR-H trailed 6-1 after four frames before the Maroons erupted for seven runs in the fifth.

Menominee scored its seventh run on a bases-loaded walk and Kadyn Olsen followed with a two-run bloop single to centerfield for a 9-1 cushion.

“Our bats kind of came alive in the last four games,” Menominee coach Dale Olsen said. “We started with a couple doubles and got that home run, which I think set the tone. We’ve got some power, but I think we overswing at times.”

The Broncos, who trailed 13-1 going into their half of the fifth, answered with four runs of their own.

Taylor Klee’s two-run single to left, trimmed BR-H’s deficit to 10 runs and a two-run single to right by Gracie Winters made it 13-5.

“We were able to battle, only we need to do that earlier in the game,” Arndt said. “We made a nice double play during the game which was good. We get flashes of greatness, but we’re looking for more consistency.”

The Maroons exploded for eight runs in the sixth, including two on a homer to left by Jazmine Jasenovsky and four on Sadie Betzinger’s grand slam to left.

“It’s easy to get complacent,” coach Olsen said. “The girls did a nice job avoiding that tonight. They’ve been cheering each other on, which is making a big impact.”

Johnson finished with four hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in three runs. Kadyn Olsen also collected four hits.

The Broncos finished with 12 hits, led by Kate Erickson and Stella Rebitzke with three apiece. Klee chipped in with two.

BR-H (8-6), which played at Crystal Falls Forest Park Tuesday, hosts Carney-Nadeau in a twinbill Thursday at 4 p.m. Menominee (8-6) hosts Escanaba in a doubleheader today at 4:30.

Starting at $3.50/week.
