Rapid River outpaced by Forest Park
CRYSTAL FALLS — The Rapid River Rockets fell behind quickly here Friday night, dropping a 69-32 football decision to the second-ranked Forest Park Trojans.
Forest Park scored twice within the first three minutes, 35 seconds of this eight-player contest.
The Rockets climbed within 16-8 on a quarterback sneak by Blake Lundquist with 3:27 left in the opening frame.
Forest Park scored the next four touchdowns, gaining a 47-8 advantage with 3:48 remaining in the second stanza.
Lundquist then threw a 52-yard TD pass to Carter Johnson at 1:21, but the Rockets still trailed 47-16 at halftime.
Nick Raspor provided the Rockets with TD runs of 62 and 12 yards in the second half as the Rockets fell to 2-4 overall.
“We moved the ball the whole game,” said Rockets’ coach Steve Ostrenga. “Only, we have to finish some drives. Twice we gave them the ball inside their 20-yard line and once inside their five. I thought we showed some nice improvement, but we need to improve on our tackling and get good team defensive play.”
Rapid River finished with 454 yards in total offense, including 231 on the ground. Raspor gained 88 on five carries, and Horwitz ran 14 times for 76. Lundquist was 15-of-33 passing for 223 yards and an interception.
“Blake did a pretty good job. Our line (Mason Lippold, Joey and Damyn Smith) did a pretty good job blocking for him, and our running backs stepped up,” said Ostrenga. “We certainly can’t fault the effort out there. Nick struggled early but played real well the rest of the game both ways. Many times we were in position to score. Our captains are showing excellent leadership, and the guys are working at it. It’s a work in progress. We need to get a couple guys healthy.”
Damyn Smith and Hunter Johnson recovered a fumble apiece for the Rockets, who host North Dickinson Friday. The Trojans (6-0) host Gogebic Friday.
