Jets swept by Mustangs

POWERS — The Munising Mustangs swept the North Central Jets in three sets (25-16, 25-15, 25-14) Monday night in Powers.

“We wanted to come in and just serve well tonight,” said Mustangs coach

Josh Cole. “That’s been the emphasis the last couple weeks and the last couple games we’ve had, here, we’ve done a good job of serving pressure, and tonight was no different.”

Munising controlled the majority of the match, holding the lead throughout most of the night. North Central, however, was able to have several bursts of points throughout the night.

One of these bursts came in the third set in the form of a five-point run with Katelyn Deming serving.

On the Mustangs side, Jenna Mattson held down the serving game with eight aces. However, Cole cited an all-around team performance as the key to victory.

“We definitely like to spread the ball around,” he said. “We run a 6-2 this year, so we always have that right side hitter option if we can get it.

“Both of our middles played really well tonight. It’s always a big thing when your middles are hitting well. It kind of opens up the pins for everyone else.”

Valerie Johnson had eight kills for the Mustangs, while Emmy Crisp had 10 assists.

For the Jets — who were meeting for the first time in a week — it was a mixture of good and bad throughout the night, said coach Rick Mick.

“It was kind of a mixed bag of emotions tonight,” Mick said. “We started off a little slow, but Munising is a very good team. They’re a very good team and they hit from everywhere and they’re hard to defend, so I challenged the girls to block tonight, to get their hands in front of their balls, and they did that.

“It was really strange, each set was its own different world. They each had their bright spots, and each had their (problems).”

Mick, however, was overall happy with how the night unfolded.

“We were about 50-percent serve receive, which is pretty normal for us, and 30 digs in three sets, that’s actually pretty good. Nothing stuck out to me tonight as real positive or real negative.”

Ashley Neuens led the Jets in aces with four, while Katelyn Deming had eight digs. Mady Bemis led in assists with five.

In the JV match, the Mustangs won 2-1 (24-26, 25-23, 15-5).

The Mustangs host the Cougars of Superior Central on Thursday, while the Jets have another break before playing the Bark River-Harris Broncos on Oct. 18.
