Broncos sweep Mustangs
HARRIS — A home victory was in store Tuesday night for the Bark River-Harris Broncos as they swept the Munising Mustangs 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-13) in Harris.
It was the first game in two weeks for the Broncos — who only have one match under their belt — their season-opening win against Menominee — and it showed early, said coach Jennifer Ives.
“We started off a little rusty and made mistakes that we don’t normally make; missed serves and communication miscues,” Ives said. “However, as we became more comfortable, we were able to settle in and play our game.”
Tressa Ives led the Broncos in kills with five. She also had six digs, a category that was led by Graci Varoni with eight.
Alaska Peterson had 11 assists, while Carley Varoni had five aces as the respective leaders for those stats.
Coach Ives mentioned the Bark River performance on defense and serving as vital parts of the win.
“Our defense stepped up and made good plays to start to turn the game around,” she said. “We cleaned up our serving game and began communicating better.
“In games two and three, we had very few serving mistakes and, again, our defense held strong, which was key to the game.”
Behind the Broncos was also a strong student section that “kept the energy up”, said coach Ives. She also added that Munising had a strong defense and served well, too.
The Broncos will host the North Central Jets on Thursday.
