Eskymos, Flivvers’ match ends in tie
KINGSFORD — The Escanaba girls tennis team ended up in a tie (4-4) against Kingsford Wednesday in Kingsford.
Each team won half of singles and doubles to complete the push.
“After a rainout on Tuesday, we were able to play the match Wednesday,” Esky coach Chris Ogren said. “It was hot and humid in Kingsford today, so the girls did well to stay hydrated and keep the energy high. We were without three of our usual starters today, so we had three JV players making their varsity debuts.”
Making their varsity debuts were Madi Fulsher at No. 4 singles where she fell to Kingsford’s Ella Rizzo in a contested first set, 6-7(6), and couldn’t recover in the second, 1-6.
“Madi Fulsher battled out a tough loss at No. 4 singles in her first-ever varsity match,” Ogren said.
At No. 4 doubles, it was also Chloe Dutton and Morgan Gartland’s first varsity start. The duo built up some momentum in the first set to win it 6-4 but couldn’t keep it rolling, falling to Kingsford’s Lexie Vross and Ellyce Doenier in the last two sets, 3-6, 2-6.
“Chloe Dutton and Morgan Gartland lost a grueling 3-set, 2-hour match in their first varsity appearance,” Ogren said.
The Eskymos took No. 1 and No. 2 singles, with Sophia Derkos defeating Kingsford’s Ashylyn Blaskowski at No. 1, 6-2, 6-0. At No. 2, Esky’s Natalie Williams finished Jenna Olkkonen in two sets, 6-0, 6-1.
As for doubles, Escanaba’s Grace Wickham and Abby Hill breezed past Kingsford’s Paige Janousek and Delaney Cram in two sets, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1, and Molly VanDamme and Lily Newhouse earned the win at No. 3 over the Flivvers’ Addie Rutter and Linnea Grubb, 6-4, 6-1.
“Gracie Wickham and Abby Hill played the best tennis I’ve seen them play this year,” Ogren said. “Abby Hill showed her tremendous aggressiveness at the net, while Gracie Wickham was able to hit a couple great shots with her slice forehand that she’s been working on over the summer.
“It was a good showing from the team, and I was happy to be able to get some new players in the lineup.”
