Column: An amazing experience at the Off-Road Rumble

Todd Rose | Daily Press Johnny Greaves (22) leads son C.J. Greaves (33) and Kyle LeDuc (99) at the Bark River Off-Road Rumble Saturday at the Bark River International Raceway.

BARK RIVER — For years, it had been a dream of mine — simply as a racing fan — to attend the Off-Road Rumble at the Bark River International Raceway. To have been able to attend it and cover it for the Daily Press fulfilled that dream and then some.

But when I finished writing my story for the Monday edition of the Daily Press, I felt there was so much more that I didn’t fit into my story. Primarily, I was not able to fit in the names of all the local drivers who competed.

They are, by class: Pro2 – Kyle Kleiman (Wilson).

Pro-Lite – Cody Kleiman (Wilson).

Pro Mod SxS – Elliott Burns (Sagola), Tyler Livingston (Escanaba), Gabe Johnson (Felch), Mark Hanson (Bergland).

Pro Stock SxS – Matt Wood (Champion), Rob Stier (Escanaba).

Pro Am SxS – Mike Caswell (Wells).

170 SxS – Jersey Kleikamp (Wilson), Tanner Thibeault (Ishpeming).

570 SxS – Benjamin Heiting (Escanaba), Andy Johnson (Bark River), Connor LaCasse (Escanaba).

Short Course Kart – Lane Wender (Iron Mountain), Mason Querio (Iron Mountain).

Mod Kart – Porter Inglese (Felch), Zack Wirhanowicz (Bark River), Troy Johnson (Bark River), Antonio Inglese (Felch).

Sportsman SxS – Bryce Carlson (Gladstone), Paige Wirhanowicz (Bark River), Danielle Reeves (Baraga).

Stock Truck – Parker Cain (Big Bay).

Super Stock – Trey Beauchamp (Cornell), Braden Beauchamp (Escanaba), Scott Heikkila (Marquette).

Super Buggy – Paul Hayward (Gladstone).

1600 Single Buggy – Jaime Kleikamp (Wilson), James Thompson (Gwinn), Jeff Sakovitz (Menominee).

1600 Light Buggy – Eric LaFreniere (Quinnesec), Michael Bettiga (Daggett), Adam Heikkila (Marquette).

These drivers — and a mass of others — provided some of the most incredible sights I have ever seen at a racetrack. Between throwing the back end out into corners, sending dirt flying, flying through the air themselves and just all-around great racing, I can now say that a trip to the Bark River International Raceway is a must for any race fan.

The AMSOIL Championship Off-Road series is, to me, a near-perfect combination of every kind of racing.

You have the variety of classes — albeit not on track at the same time — of sports car racing, the side-by-side battles of short track oval racing, and the craziness of rally car racing with jumps and the need for inch-perfect driving with the risk of an accident from the slightest miscalculation.

It has something for everybody, and the Bark River International Raceway provides an excellent place to see all of it, literally.

From the top of the hill — and even more so from the top of the grandstand — pretty much all of the on-track battles can be seen across the 1.5-mile track.

I found myself on the top of the hill on the backside and side of the grandstands among some incredible fans for the better part of the weekend. While the front section of the track was difficult to see — I mean there was a grandstand in my way — I was able to see the whole backside of the track.

The challenging blind corner that runs down to Cemetery Corner and winds back to the massive jump that sends machines flying up to over 200 feet through the air, my vantage point provided a view to it all.

Thanks to the kindness of Bark River International Raceway representatives Courtney Prost and Scott Kwarciany, I was also able to watch much of the action from the VIP area at the crest of the jump — an absolutely incredible view.

There is nothing quite like seeing a truck take off the lip of that jump at full song. It is — in my mind — otherworldly.

On top of the racing, the biggest thing to me was just how welcoming everyone at the track was. From the hardworking volunteers and Lions Club members who put the event together to the fans and drivers — like Johnny and C.J. Greaves, Kyle Kleiman and Braden Beauchamp who all let me talk their ears off — everyone was great to be around and helpful with any questions. And trust me, this off-road newbie had plenty of those.

For any racing fan — like myself — the Off-Road Rumble should be a bucket list item. Even after being at the track all this weekend, I still feel like I need more.
