Over 400 attend MISH marathon

GLADSTONE — Brent Riopelle led from start to finish, earning top honors in the MISH Waterfront Marathon here Saturday morning.

The Green Bay resident covered the 26.2-mile course in two hours, 51 minutes, 27.8 seconds on this cloudy and mild day, qualifying him for the 2022 Boston Marathon.

“I just wanted to run and have some fun today,” he said. “It had been nearly 1 1/2 years since I ran a marathon, and it felt pretty good to get this in. The weather was actually pretty nice.”

He was followed by women’s champion Trisha Nelson of Maquoketa, Iowa at 3:01.30.3.

“We had perfect weather,” she said. “The lake was gorgeous. It was a fun race, and it was well organized. I was hoping for under three hours, but I just didn’t get it done today. I actually had COVID about a month ago and kept trying to run through it. I was a little curious to see how it would work out and went out at my goal pace.”

Victoria Phillippi of Minneapolis was women’s runner-up (3:18:13.3), and Jennifer Rush of Gorham, Maine was third (3:35:33.5).

Colby Pfeiffer of downstate Chelsea took second among the men (3:22:41.2), followed by Josh Granquist of Powers (3:25:50.5).

Wayne Weaver of Hancock was eighth overall (3:32:20.9).

Kathy Derks of Appleton, Wis. dominated the half-marathon, cruising through the 13.1-mile course in a personal-best 1:14:20.2.

She was followed by men’s champion Adam Cavagnetto of Norway (1:21:57.5), Drew Hughes of Gladstone (1:22:15.2), Escanaba girls’ track coach Dan DeLong (1:28:06.4) and Lucas Hughes of Gladstone (1:29:13).

The margin of victory came as no surprise to Derks, whose marathon PR (personal record) is 2:36.

“I mostly used this as training for my next marathon (Chicago in October),” said Derks. “I just tried to stay consistent and relaxed. I didn’t really know what to expect. This was a great event. I’m going to recommend this to my running friends.”

Rochelle Anderson of Marinette was women’s runner-up (1:35:30.5), followed by Julia Viel of St. Ignace (1:35:35.7).

James Lilly of Trenary placed sixth overall (1:30:53.9), followed by Kevin Socia of Kingsford (1:33.27.1) and Jake Denkins of Rapid River (1:34:51.6).

Eric Lundin of Gladstone took 12th (1:37:41.9).

Jason Phillippi of Plymouth, Minn. copped the men’s 10-kilometer title in 37:25.5. He was followed by Benjamin Vardigan of Minneapolis (42:53.8), Timothy Lawrence of Pembine, Wis. (46:51.6) and Ben Smith of Gladstone (47:37.1).

Jimmy Gathu of Crystal Falls placed sixth overall (48:20), followed by Roger Tourangeau of Wilson (50:24.9) and Robert Miller of Escanaba (50:55).

Leanne Pinkert of Sturgeon Bay, Wis. was crowned women’s champion (51:06), followed by Patricia Hellman of Marquette (51:45.4) and Meghan Kehr of Jenison, Mich. (53:15.7).

Stephen Benoit of Escanaba took 12th (51:16) and Jaclyn Vail of Manistique was 17th (53:22.6).

The races started and finished at the Terrace Bay Inn and basically followed the shoreline of Little Bay de Noc with the full marathon turn-around at the Rapid River boat launch. The half-marathon runners turned around in the north side of Gladstone with the 10-K turn-around at Van Cleve Park.

The runners were greeted by small groups of fans who cheered them on at various locations along the mostly flat course.

Temperatures hovered near 60 degrees during the event, which drew 427 entrants.
