KINGSFORD — The Gladstone boys had been trying to catch Marquette all season.

That didn’t happen here Saturday, however, as the Redmen were crowned Upper Peninsula Division 1 track and field champions with 140 points.

Defending champ Gladstone scored 93, and third-place Kingsford had 65.

Gladstone senior Blake Servant was a double-winner, taking the 110-meter hurdles in 15.53 seconds and discus at 151 feet, one inch.

Senior Calvin Thibault added a first in the 300 hurdles in a season-best 40.8 and was runner-up in the 110s (15.95). Servant placed second in the 300s (41.53) on a day which temperatures hovered in the low to mid-90s with a heat index of 99 during which is believed to be the hottest U.P. Finals on record.

“I can’t believe it,” Thibault said moments after winning the 300s. “I finally got this again. I focused on keeping my form, and it really paid off. Blake did really well.”

Gladstone senior Ethan Milam and Menominee junior Brady Schultz were the last two standing in high jump as they battled for the U.P. record.

Schultz prevailed with a U.P. and school-record leap of six feet, eight inches, topping the previous U.P. record (6-5) by Kingsford’s Jake Richmond in 2004.

“It’s good to have that competition,” said Schultz. “We really help each other out. I was happy to get the U.P. record and tie the school record. It really helps to clear 6-8. I was tired when we got to 6-9.”

Milam cleared 6-6, matching his own school record set during a triangular meet at Gladstone May 11.

My friend Lucas Hughes told me to keep saying to myself ‘you’re going to make it,’” said Milam. “I’m definitely pleased with my season. I set multiple records. Taking a year off (due to COVID-19) made a big difference. I had a chance to take a break. It was definitely refreshing to get track back this year.”

Junior Sasha Olsen provided an additional first for Gladstone after clearing 11-6 in pole vault.

Escanaba senior Derek Douglas won the 800 in a personal-best 2:00.68, shaving .08 second off his previous best in the Northern Michigan Meet of Champions at Gaylord June 1.

“It was a challenge trying to stay cool,” said Douglas. “I was sitting in front of a fan with icepacks on me, trying to stay cool. It feels great to get a U.P. Finals win. All the hard work I put in paid off.”

Dollar Bay earned its first U.P. title in school history, topping the D-3 standings with 67 points.

The Blue Bolts were followed by Pickford 55 and Rapid River 47.

Rapid River senior Max Lenaker won high jump (6-1), and classmate Parker Dausey copped discus (126-1).

North Central copped the 400 relay (46.32), and sophomore Luke Gorzinski won the 200 (23.29), edging Republic-Michigamme’s Isaac Lawrence by .02 second.

Senior Tim Hodson provided a victory for Carney-Nadeau in the 110 hurdles (17.58).

Norway and Ishpeming shared the D-2 championship with 95 points, and third-place Iron Mountain had 85.

This marked Norway’s first U.P. title since 2004.
