Indians fall to Blues

Todd Rose | Daily Press Gladstone’s Tyler Darmogrey starts toward first base after a hit against Marquette Friday during a Gregg Johnson-Al Erickson Memorial Legion baseball tournament game in Gladstone.

GLADSTONE — The Marquette Blues grabbed the win 8-1 over the Gladstone Indians in a Gregg Johnson-Al Erickson Memorial Tournament game Friday afternoon in Gladstone.

The game ended in the bottom of the sixth after hitting its two-hour time limit.

Brady Wright toed the rubber for the Blues for the whole game throwing for seven strikeouts with one walk. He gave up five hits for one earned run.

Wright also had a hit for an RBI, offensively.

The win was the second for the day for the Blues after defeating the Bark River Bucs 10-1 in the morning

“(It’s) a good start to the season for the program,” said Blues manager Derek Swajanen. “…We only had two errors throughout the course of the day, which is nice and solid.

Swajanen added the ability to put in different pitchers if need be as one of Marquette’s strengths. Between the two games, the Blues played four pitchers.

“It’s nice with a staff like this,” he said. “I’ve got 10 pitchers I can throw in at any time, so it’s really nice. We’ve got a lot of arms that are stockpiled.”

The Blues got on the board — and got their motor started — when Jakob Peterson hit a solo shot over the left-field fence to lead off the second inning. He repeated the feat with another solo home run to the same spot in the sixth.

The Blues followed the first Peterson homer with two more runs in the third. Kyle Frusti doubled to bring home Erik Johnson while Justin Wenk singled on a liner to score Frusti.

“The second one was an absolute bomb,” said Swajanen of Petersons homers. “It was higher than the foul pole when it went across the fence.

“He did a great job. He’s a great defensive catcher; then you add in hitting two bombs today, also, (and) he’s pretty much an all-around player.”

Mason LaChance started on the mound for the Indians and went for two innings. He had two walks with three allowed hits for three earned runs.

Tyler Darmogrey came in for the third and pitched for three and 2/3 innings. He had one strikeout with four walks and gave up five hits for five runs (3 ER).

Dylan Pepin finished the game with one strikeout.

LaChance scored the only Gladstone run when he was batted in by a single from Pepin in the fifth.

“We did some positive things that we picked up from (Thursday against Escanaba),” said Indians manager Scott Kwarciany. “(Thursday), we looked at a lot of pitches and took a lot of strikeouts we shouldn’t have taken. Today we hit the ball.”

The biggest takeaway from the game, said Kwarciany, was the Indians’ energy levels.

“We want them to pick up their energy a little bit,” he said. “It’s a game. They’re supposed to be out there having fun, and they’re not having a whole lot of fun right now. And their confidence is a little shaken up.

“But, we’re going to regroup. Come back (Saturday), we got a couple home games here, and try to get things going in a positive direction.”

Kwarciany also noted Darmogray’s pitching as a positive from the game.

Gladstone had five hits, with LaChance and Pepin each getting two. Elijah Shier had the other Indians hit.

The Blues start play today at 10:30 a.m. against Green Bay in Escanaba then they play again in Wells at 1:30 p.m. against Marinette.

Gladstone hosts Marinette at 4:30 p.m. and Bark River at 7:00 in back-to-back games.
