Broncos girls earn second at invite
HARRIS — Matching Stephenson’s overall depth was difficult for area track teams as it swept both titles in the Bark River-Harris Invitational here Monday.
The Stephenson boys scored 174 points, followed by Norway 138 and North Central 87 on this sunny and warm afternoon.
Stephenson’s girls tallied 210 points, followed by BR-H 133 and North Central 61.
Kylie Kuntze provided the Eagles with victories in the 1600-meter run in six minutes, 17 seconds, 3200 (14:10) and helped the winning 1600 and 3200 relays.
“Kylie had a good meet,” said Stephenson coach Kate Kuntze. “She ran comfortably today. She ran a leg in the 1600 and had a good split. This was a real good workout for us.”
Jada Kuntze, also a part of those relays, added firsts in the 800 (2:43.02) and high jump at four feet, eight inches. Daisy Grinsteiner won pole vault (8-6), and Paige Cappaert took discus (84-2).
BR-H sophomore Hazel Conklin took the 100 hurdles (19.02) and 300s (53.55) and helped the Broncos win the 400 relay and take second in the 1600 relay.
“This was our first time doing the 1600 relay,” she said. “We did it once in practice and cut about 10 seconds off from last week. I’ve been doing hurdles for a while. I’ve moved my blocks up a little from the past, and it helped quite a bit. I’m happy with my form, but there’s always room for improvement. I should practice on those more.”
Junior Aspen Fredrick added a first in the 100 (13.43), freshman McKenzie Hoffmeyer copped the 200 (28.52) and long jump (13-11), and classmate Julia Olsen took the 400 (1:06.46).
Olsen was followed by Carney-Nadeau’s Samantha Kedsch (1:09.6), who earned another silver in long jump (13-9.5).
Malorie Baumler gave Carney its lone first in shot put (31-5).
Norway junior Adam Cavagnetto, who had been battling a blood disorder for several months, captured the 800 (2:11.28) and 1600 (4:52.31) in his third meet this season.
“I’m happy with that time, especially with it being super dry,” he said shortly after finishing the 800. “I’m good friends with the Stephenson guy (runner-up D’Artagnon Meintz). I’m super happy to be back out here running after some dark months in my life, and after the COVID thing, you’re eager to get back out there. There was some good competition here today.”
Norway’s Zach Seat won the 200 (23.74).
Stephenson sophomore Spencer Coldren copped pole vault (10-0). Teammate Griffin Brown took the 400 (55.52), edging Coldren by .1 second, and Tyler Engel won the 3200 (12:12.38).
“Our times were a little slower today, and our throwers had an off day,” said Stephenson coach Logan Carlson. “Right now, we’re not used to the heat, but it supposed to be in the 80s on Friday (for the Division 3 regional at Stephenson. It was good for our kids to experience this.”
North Central prevailed in a tightly-contested 400 relay (47.28) where less than .6 seconds separated the four teams, and junior Wyatt Raab won shot put (36-1/2).
Superior Central’s Zach Frusti captured the 100 (11.69) and high jump (5-6), and Kyle Frusti was the winner in discus (108-6).
