Norse earn win over B&S
WELLS — Tanner Halvorson carried a big stick here Sunday, and the Bay College Norse couldn’t have been more relieved with the results.
Halvorson went 3-for-3 in the second game of a doubleheader, helping the Norse snap a 23-game losing streak with a 4-2 baseball victory over Bryant & Stratton College of Milwaukee.
The Bobcats took a 13-8 rain-shortened victory in Saturday’s series opener, then won Sunday’s first game 5-1.
Halvorson’s leadoff home run into a stiff breeze to centerfield in the fifth inning enabled the Norse to gain their final two-run margin in Sunday’s nightcap.
“That was special,” said Bay manager Mike Pankow. “Not only did Tanner hit that one into the wind, but he cleared the fence in the most difficult part of the field. That was impressive. The kids deserved to win this one. It was great to see the guys smile again and get a win. They’ve played hard all year.”
The Bobcats were trailing 3-0 after four innings before pinch hitter Ethan Toone lined a two-run double into the leftfield corner to bring them within a run in their half of the fifth.
Bryant & Stratton threatened in the sixth but left two runners on base.
Winning pitcher Jackson Bower then got two quick outs in the seventh, but Toone singled to left, and Bower walked the next batter.
With two on and two out, Ian Schwalbach came on in relief and retired the final hitter for the save.
“Ian was in a tough spot,” said Pankow. “There’s a lot of pressure on a pitcher when he comes in with the tying run on second, but Ian got the job done. This was a great win. I thought we had good pitching all day. Jack pitched his tail off. He really deserved to win this one. We felt the wins were going to come, but we’re developing, and it just took longer than we thought. One thing is we’re still leaving too many runners on base.”
The Norse opened the scoring on Halvorson’s first of two doubles in the first. They made it 2-0 on Grant Craft’s ground out, and Halvorson scored their third run on Hector Araguayan’s single.
Bower struck out six, walked five and scattered five hits through 6 2/3 innings of work. Azhur Khan, who pitched the opening frame, absorbed the loss.
The Bobcats scored three times in the opening frame of Sunday’s opener, taking advantage of two errors, two walks, a hit batsman, wild pitch and passed ball.
Bay loaded the bases with nobody out in the second but managed just one run on a ground out.
Robert Logan-Martin went 2-for-2 for the Bobcats, who added runs in the fourth and fifth.
Nick Goebert became the hard-luck losing pitcher, allowing just two hits, striking out five and walking five through four innings. Matt Bush then made his collegiate debut, giving up a run on two hits and recording three strikeouts and three walks in three innings of relief.
Brenden Bille took the win in long relief, allowing just one run on four hits, striking out nine and walking three through six innings.
The Norse trailed 6-0 in the second frame of the series-opener Saturday before Craft got them on the board with a towering solo shot to left in their half of the inning.
After the Bobcats extended their lead to 7-1 in the third, Halverson blasted a two-run shot to left in Bay’s half of the inning.
Craft’s single brought the Norse within 7-4. Craft then scored on Logan Michalko’s single to make it 7-5.
The Bobcats broke it open by scoring five times for an insurmountable 12-5 advantage in the fourth.
Tyson Ludwig and Martin homered and drove in four runs for the Bobcats (18-22).
Craft got two hits and three RBIs. Alex Morehouse also had two hits for the Norse (3-24), who travel to Illinois for a twinbill of College of DuPage Thursday.
Zeke Klais was the winning pitcher. Dalton Graham absorbed the loss, allowing 12 runs on nine hits through 4 1/3 innings. Craft fanned eight and gave up three hits in 2 2/3 frames of relief.
