Gladstone sweeps

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Braves swept the Negaunee Miners (10-2, 12-1) in a Thursday afternoon doubleheader in Gladstone.

“As a team, we executed our plays pretty well,” said Braves coach Lucas LaCosse. “We got some key bunts down in that first game and came back (after being down by two) by playing some small ball.”

Braden Sundquist pitched all four innings — the game ended via the mercy rule after four — of the second game. He had three strikeouts and threw for 55 pitches.

Owen Mattonen and Texas Cambron each earned their first varsity hits of the season in the win.

“They came in as late subs and ended up doing really well,” said LaCosse. “The kids hit the ball really well. They’re really seeing it. We played solid defensively, too.”

The first game saw Dylan Pepin pitch a complete game with six strikeouts off 93 pitches. At bat, he had two RBIs.

LaCosse was happy with how Sundquist and Pepin performed.

“You can’t ask for better pitching,” he said.

Nick Martin was 2-3 for the Braves in the opener with a pair of RBIs.

The Braves visit Green Bay Preble Tuesday before hosting North Central Wednesday.

Starting at $4.00/week.
