Braves’ girls earn gold

GLADSTONE — Most people had already departed from the Gladstone athletic field before final results were available from a season-opener triangular track meet here Thursday.

The Gladstone girls edged Manistique 65-62, and Iron Mountain collected 35 points in their first meet in nearly two years.

Senior Ahna Larson and junior Jamisyn Bergeron led the Braves by winning three events each.

“This is going to give these girls a boost,” said Braves coach Jim Murtha. “Ahna had a real good day, and Jamisyn had a phenomenal day. They looked strong. They’re ready to go.”

The Gladstone boys also won with 92 1/2 points, followed by Iron Mountain 45 and Manistique 33 1/2 on this sunny, chilly and breezy day.

“We’re glad to get this meet in,” said Gladstone boys’ coach Gary Whitmer. “It was a little windy, but it was good for our kids to get a chance to run against other kids. Hopefully, this will fire them up. It’ll be good to get another full meet in Tuesday (Delta County Invitational at Rapid River).”

Larson won the girls’ 100-meter hurdles in 17.49 seconds, 300 hurdles (48.91) and long jump at 15 feet, two inches and Bergeron took the 100 dash (13.46), 200 (28.74) and 400 (1:04.65).

“This was my first meet since my freshman year,” said Bergeron. “It felt great to get this in. This gives me a better idea what to expect on Tuesday. I think I was more excited than nervous. I just tried to have fun. My starts were real good.”

Manistique’s Danielle Lund was a double-winner, taking shot put (31-1) and discus (86-7).

“I was really happy with our performance today,” said Emeralds’ coach Amy Nixon. “This was the first high school meet for most of our kids. Danielle did a nice job in shot and disc, and our 3200 relay was really awesome. This was a good opportunity for us to compete against other schools.”

Iron Mountain senior Sarah Kulas copped the 1600 (6:14.55) and 3200 (13:43.3).

“It was nice to have a track meet after missing last year,” she said. “I was a little nervous coming in. It was so nerve wracking after taking last year off. I didn’t really know what to expect. I was happy with my mile. I think I could have done better in the two-mile, but this is a good starting point. It was also nice having a meet with just three teams. This gave us a chance to ease into everything.”

The Mountaineers also won the 400 and 800 relays and Chloe Maycroft took high jump (4-11).

“Chloe had a nice jump for the first meet,” said Mountaineer coach Karen Ellis. “I’m very pleased with the effort by all the kids. Our sprint relays did real well, and our distance people have been working real hard. We definitely need to work on our field events and find some more hurdlers.”

Senior Blake Servant led the Gladstone boys with victories in the 110 hurdles (16.14), 300s (44.06), long jump (18-3) and discus (142-4).

“I’m pretty happy with the way this meet went, although I think my hurdles could have been a little better,” said Servant. “It was kind of nice to get one in before the Delta County meet. I think this is a huge boost for us. The last couple days were cold and windy, although it was a little better today. Hopefully, it’ll warm up soon.”

Senior Ethan Milam added a first for the Braves in high jump at 6-4.

“That’s amazing, in cold weather, too,” said Whitmer. “This was a solid performance by our team, plus we have plenty of time to recover.”

Iron Mountain won both sprint relays, and Dante Basanese took the 100 (12.01) and 200 (25.43).

Carter Miller got Manistique’s lone first in the 400 (57.25).

The Mountaineers resume in the Niagara Invitational April 29, and Manistique hosts its Kiwanis Invitational the next day.
