Carney-Nadeau at North Dickinson

FELCH TOWNSHIP — In what was a competitive, Skyline Central Conference boys basketball game, Carney-Nadeau eked past North Dickinson 50-48 Wednesday night at the Carl F. Lemin Jr. Gymnasium in Felch.

Maximus Mattson led all scorers with 22 points for the Nordics while dishing out seven assists and grabbing five rebounds.

Tim Hodson finished with 17, Beau Koffman with 14, and Jerry Lee LaFord with 11 points for the Wolves.

“Give North Dickinson credit, we only shot 3 for 26 in the first half,” said veteran Carney-Nadeau head coach Paul Polfus. “We had a big fourth quarter and pulled it out. It ended up being a good win for our kids.”

Warren Gustafson, who netted 13 points, did great off the bench, with his contributions Nordics head coach Chris Mattson noted.

“I liked the intensity we showed in the first quarter tonight. When we played them down there, we came out flat and dug ourselves a hole,” Coach Mattson said. “Our defense in the first half was great, as was our defensive rebounding.

“The game could have went either way, despite us not being real sharp right after halftime,” Mattson added. “We responded later in the third quarter.”

Mattson stated that the game was Maximus Mattson’s best as a varsity player for North Dickinson.

“We gave up to many points in the fourth quarter and we didn’t make our free throws down the stretch and turned the ball over too much,” Coach Mattson said. “The kids played well enough to win tonight and I am proud of them. Despite our record, this team has shown some progress and gets better each game.”

The Nordics, who slip to 1-9 (1-8 SCC), return to action tonight as they travel to SCC foe Mid Peninsula. The varsity-only matchup will tip off at 5 p.m. Central.

The Wolves improved to 7-6 (6-3 SCC), return home to host SCC for Forest Park on Friday, before hosting non-conference for Hannahville on Tuesday.

North Dickinson won the JV game.

Negaunee at Manistique

MANISTIQUE — The Manistique Emeralds girls’ basketball team (3-6) lost Wednesday night 51-30 against the Negaunee Miners (9-2) in Manistique.

“We knew Negaunee would come out in a high-pressure man defense,” said Emeralds coach Jenna Bradshaw. “So, we were able to prepare for that tonight.”

On their own defensive side of things, Bradshaw said the Emeralds have a little tidying up to do.

“We need to clean up our rebounding and prevent second-chance shots,” she said. “They did a good job on the offensive glass. Alyssa Hill is a very talented rebounder and was able to put back a lot of shots.”

Even with the little bit of work to tighten things up, Bradshaw was happy with what she saw from her team.

“Our defense looked great tonight,” she said. “The girls really communicated well, forced turnovers and finished in transition.

“They put forth a great effort and stayed calm under the pressure.”

Bailey St. John led Manistique’s scoring with 14 points.

Friday night, the Emeralds will be in action against the Iron Mountain Mountaineers in Iron Mountain.
